ELIZABETH (HANFORD) WHITSON

Obituary Condolences

ELIZABETH (HANFORD) WHITSON Burlington - "Peg" (Hanford) Whitson, 89, passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, in Starr Farm Nursing Center. She was born on May 20, 1925, in Rochester, N.Y., to Herbert E. and Katherine (Kelley) Hanford, longtime residents of Rochester and Orchard Park, N.Y. Peg excelled in her studies while attending Orchard Park Central High School where she enjoyed music, especially playing the drums in the band. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1943 and continued her education at Buffalo State College. After graduation, she became an art teacher in several schools in Buffalo, N.Y., Denver, Colo., Binghamton, Pa., and Burlington, Vt. She was an avid skier, hiker, explorer, and boat person. She rowed around Lake Champlain in a boat she rebuilt to fit her needs and wrote a book about her adventures entitled "Once Upon a Rowboat". Her interest and love of water came from her many summers spent at the Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence River. Some of her explorations got her into trouble with the "Boat Patrol" who kept watch over empty and abandoned structures. She created a map of Lake Champlain which was published and sold in numerous book stores. Peg was a member of the Stowe Ski Patrol and the Green Mountain Hiking Club. Her husband, Charles Whitson, predeceased her many years ago. Survivors include her sister, Susan H. Stephenson of Lincoln, Calif.; her daughter, Sandra Wright of Gulfport, Miss.; two nieces, Kelley Livingston and Christie Stephenson, both of California; and many very close and wonderful friends in the Burlington area. Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Elmwood-Meunier Funeral Home. Donations may be sent in Peg's name to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, 4472 Basin Harbor Rd., Vergennes, VT, 05491.
