RUTH MARIE GRAMS CORLEY ESSEX JUNCTION - Ruth Marie Grams Corley, 88, passed away peacefully with her family's support at her home in Essex Junction on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010. Ruth was born Dec. 19, 1921 in Cleveland, OH, daughter of Rudolf and Florentina Grams who immigrated from Germany. Ruth attended what is now known as Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, Lyndon State College, and continuing education classes at UVM. During World War II, she served in the US Marine Corps Women's Reserve as a Staff Sergeant in recruiting. She was employed by the previous Chittenden Bank for over 20 years, retiring in 1984 as Operations Officer in the Essex Junction branch office. She was also active as an officer in the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce, was a Girl Scout leader, PTA President, a Director at Howard Mental Health, a Vice Chairperson of Friends of Brownell Library, and a volunteer in several United Way campaigns. After her retirement from the bank, Ruth was an energetic Guide at the Shelburne Museum for 19 years. Ruth lived her life with strong devotions to her faith, family and friends. She loved gardening, books, crafts, learning, and especially enjoyed communicating with and learning about people. She had the incredible ability to see the best in all the people she came to know and enjoy and truly loved being their friend. She was a constant teacher; sharing her knowledge and life experiences to everyone she befriended, becoming a true gift in the lives of many who knew her. Her home was always a place of love and friendship. She will be deeply missed, but her teachings will live long in the memories of many. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years, William H. Corley. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Susan (Corley) Miller, wife of James Miller; and her sister, Doris Behrer. She is survived by three of her four children: daughter, Mary Florentina Pratt and husband, John Pratt, parents of grandson, Henry Pratt and his wife, Cathleen Muller; daughter, Cathleen Butterfield and husband, William Butterfield, parents of Bridget Butterfield, mother of great-grandson, Phoenix Ashby, and Ben Butterfield and his wife, Megan Butterfield; son, Thomas Grams Corley and wife, Shauna Corley, parents of grandson, Travis William Corley and his wife, Molly Corley; several loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and a lifetime of friends and neighbors; and her beloved dog, Scooter. Ruth's family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to Kathy Rouleau and Joyce Ordway, her neighbors, and the people at Home Instead and Meals on Wheels for their wonderful friendship and care of our mother. A Celebration of her Life will be held at St. James Episcopal Church where she was a member for nearly 50 years, off of Route 2A at 4 St. James Place, Essex Junction, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, followed by interment in the Memorial Garden at St. James. A reception in the Church Hall will immediately follow. Corbin and Palmer of Essex Junction is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, 110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446, St. James Episcopal Church, or the Brownell Library Foundation, Inc., 6 Lincoln St., Essex Junction, VT 05452.
