JAMES P. MAHER - SOUTH BURLINGTON - James Patrick Maher, beloved son of Fred and Mary-Barbara Maher, died unexpectedly on Dec. 30, 2011. James was driving from the family home in South Burlington to New York and pulled off into a rest area, where he died apparently of natural causes. He was born Sept. 25, 1967, in South Burlington. He graduated from South Burlington High School, earned a Bachelor's Degree at St. Michael's College, and a Master's Degree from New York University. He taught mathematics at the High School of Environmental Sciences in Manhattan, Flushing High School in Queens, N.Y., and at Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Conn. While James enjoyed the challenge of teaching mathematics, his first love was making music of all sorts. He played with a variety of groups in New York City and upstate New York. Family holiday and vacation gatherings were enlivened by his musical endeavors. James is survived by his parents; three brothers, Paul, Michael, and Matthew; sister, Elizabeth; uncles, Tom Maher, Frank Maher, Anthony Barulich, and Nicholas Barulich; aunts, Sonia Fischer, Terri Liederbach, Lucille Wilson, and Mary Adams; and numerous cousins in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Missouri, and Colorado. James loved the company of other people, and he died alone in a parking area. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at 11 a.m. in St. John Vianney Church with burial to follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are in the care of the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, Burlington. To send online condolences to the family please visit
