DR. CLOTEAN H. BRAYFIELD - SHELBURNE - Dr. Clotean H. Brayfield, 81, a longtime resident of Windsor, Conn., and recently of Shelburne, died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012. Clo was born on Nov. 4, 1931, in San Bernadino, Calif., to William Gordon Helm and Myrtle A. (Kleeberger) Helm. She grew up in Bakersfield, Calif., graduated from East Bakersfield High in 1949, and went on to Stanford University, graduating with honors in 1953. That same year she married the love of her life, Bill Benjamin Brayfield, a Stanford alum and Korean War officer. After his service in the U.S. and abroad, they attended Columbia University, and Clo earned an MSW. Besides a long career as a clinical and school social worker in New York City and Connecticut, she volunteered countless hours to local and national education, community, civil rights, and political causes, including the desegregation of the Hartford region public schools. In addition, while raising four daughters, Clo earned a Doctorate of Education from the University of Massachusetts in 1978. As a program administrator for CREC in Hartford, Conn., she helped design and oversee regional special education programs that served infants through adults. After retiring from CREC, Clo became a Special Education Surrogate Parent, advocating tirelessly for foster children in Connecticut public schools. She also enjoyed traveling the world, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, going to the movies and new restaurants, and visiting with family and friends. In 2008, she moved to Wake Robin in Vermont, making many friends there. A lifelong lover of cats, she volunteered at the Humane Society of Chittenden County, and was named Adult Volunteer of the Year in 2010. Besides giving her time, Clo donated generously to numerous organizations that supported human and animal rights. She will be greatly missed for her passion for learning, warm friendship, keen wit and intelligence, activism, and practical advice, and even more as the matriarch of a big and busy clan. Clotean is survived by her daughters, Liesse Brayfield, Maris BrayfieldKittell, and Mary-Elizabeth Sciorra; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her cat, Amber. She was predeceased by her daughter, Beth Brayfield in 1982; and in 1996 by Bill Brayfield, her husband of 43 years.
