Earl R. Craig, 80, of Chicora went to be with his heavenly father early Tuesday morning at Butler Memorial Hospital following a courageous six-year battle with leukemia.
Earl was born in Kaylor, Bradys Bend Township, Armstrong County, on June 19, 1932. He was the son of Raymond T. and Vera G. Barnhart Craig.
Earl was a 1950 graduate of Fairview Township- Karns City High School. He was a longtime member of the Chicora United Methodist Church, a life member of the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department and was active for many years as an EMT with the department's ambulance service. He was a member of the Chicora VFW.
He and his wife, Maxine, enjoyed traveling and had visited all 50 states. They had been members of the Butler County Travel Club for many years. Earl was a U.S. Army veteran and was stationed in Germany in the Korean War.
Earl was a railroad employee for more than 30 years, first at Western Allegheny Railroad, and he retired as a yard foreman in 1982 from Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine Schnell Craig, who he married in Bruin on June 26, 1952. The couple had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past summer.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Keith L. Craig and his wife, Becky S., and Linda K. Lewis and her husband, Tom, all of Butler, and Glen A. Craig and his wife, Debbie, of Chicora; five grandchildren, Brad Craig of Butler, Pamela M. Burns and her husband, Dan, of Chicora, Kent A. Craig and his wife, Beth, of Chicora, Stephanie Craig of Gibsonia and Laura R. Kiser and her husband, Rich, of Cowansville; five great-grandchildren, Billy, Kendale, Nevin and Jebediah Burns and Wyatt Craig; a brother, William L. "Bill" Craig and his wife, Mary Lou, of Gillette, Wyo.; two sisters, Eileen Ballance and her husband, Leahman, of Norfolk, Va., and Barbara Umstead and her husband, Dick, of Chicora; as well as a number of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Peters and her husband, Sonny.
CRAIG - Friends of Earl R. Craig, who passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, will be received at the Hile Funeral Home of Chicora, 339 Chicora Fenelton Road, Chicora, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from noon to 1 p.m. Friday. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Wade Berkey, Earl's church pastor, officiating.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department at 8:45 p.m. Thursday. Military honors will be accorded by the Chicora VFW and American Legion, and the East Brady American Legion.
Interment in Oak Grove Cemetery, Sugarcreek Township, Armstrong County, will follow the service on Friday.
