Sister Gladys Irene Reidenouer, 93, of Zelienople left this earthly life Tuesday to go onto eternal life while under the care of Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople.
Born Aug. 12, 1919, in Pottstown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Minnie (Roth) Reidenouer.
Sister Gladys received a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Cincinnati in 1956. That same year on Sept. 9, she was consecrated as a Lutheran deaconess in the United Lutheran Church in America at the Philadelphia Motherhouse of Deaconesses in Philadelphia.
Sister Gladys served as a staff nurse at the Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia from 1950 until 1959. The following year, she joined the staff at KenCrest Children's Homes. She was then called by the Board of World Missions of the United Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church in America to serve as a missionary in Malaysia and Singapore from 1960 to 1973.
Upon returning to the United States, she was a parish deaconess at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Baltimore, Md., from 1973 to 1982. She had the honor and privilege of serving at a Baltimore hospice. In 1993, Sister Gladys came to live and work as retreat coordinator at the Deaconess Community Center of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America headquartered in Gladwyne, Pa.
When the Deaconess Communities were relocated to Chicago in 2003, Sister Gladys and other members of the community joined them.
In 2005, she joyfully moved to Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople, where she sang in the Seaman choir and the Passavant Singers. In addition, she served on the altar guild, enjoyed attending Bible studies, worship services and many monthly activities. During her free time, she volunteered as a receptionist.
Sister Gladys adored meeting people, listening to music, singing, ballet, but above all, found joy in serving her Lord. Throughout her life, Sister Gladys lovingly cared for her sister, Anna, who lived in several nursing facilities throughout Pennsylvania.
She is survived by her sister, Anna Reidenouer of Selinsgrove, Pa.; her two nephews; her family at Passavant Retirement Community; the Deaconess Community of Chicago, Ill.; and the Seaman Memorial ELCA at Passavant Retirement Community.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
