Henry Schellhaas IV
Henry J. "Jack" Schellhaas IV, 91, of Richland Township died peacefully on Thursday.
Born on June 23, 1921, above his family's funeral home on the North Side, he was the beloved son of the late Henry "Harry" and Mary (Rees) Schellhaas.
He was the beloved husband for 64 years of Miriam (Davis) Schellhaas; the loving father of Mary (Gilbert) Gust of Naples, Fla., and Virginia "Ginny" (Clifford) Neiger of McCandless; and the proud grandfather of Steven Gust, Kelly (Chris) Weaver, Christopher (Laura) Neiger, and Kelsey (Richard) Cattley. He also is survived by one newborn great-granddaughter, Lillian Grace Neiger.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his two brothers, the late Charles O. Schellhaas and Robert D. Schellhaas Sr.
Born and raised on the North Side of Pittsburgh, Jack was a graduate of Allegheny High School and the Cleveland College of Embalming, where after graduation he went to work with his father, Harry, as a fourth generation funeral director.
In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force, where he proudly served in the Pacific Theater as a medical officer.
Upon his father's sudden death during the war, Jack returned home where he continued his career along side his two brothers as a funeral director for more than 60 years, caring for countless families across the North Hills.
Jack loved living on and maintaining his family's farm in Richland, where he spent time as a boy, raised his family, and has lived since the 1950s. He especially loved his tractor and cutting grass throughout the summer. Since his retirement, Jack and Miriam enjoyed spending winters in Estero, Fla.
A longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown, Jack also was a member of the Bakerstown American Legion Post 548, the Rich-Mar Rotary Club, the Milnor Lodge 287 F&AM, the Allegheny Commandery Knights Templar, Islam Grotto and Syria Temple.
