James M. 'Smitty' Smith
James M. "Smitty" Smith, 68, of Butler passed away at 4:05 p.m. Tuesday at his home.
He was born June 7, 1945, in Butler to the late William L. Smith and Mary (Monroe) Smith.
Mr. Smith graduated from Butler High School in 1963.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Smith retired from AK Steel in 2002, and after retirement, he drove for BART (Butler Area Rural Transit) for four years. He was a member of the Tuesday Traveling Golf League, the Armco Bowling C League and the Troy Allen Bowling League.
He was a Christian.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Susan E. Smith, who he married on Aug. 22, 1964; one son, James Michael Smith of Butler; one daughter, Julie Dyann Scott and her husband, Russell, of Butler; four grandchildren, Hunter Scott, Lauren Scott, Zoe Scott and Grace Smith; four brothers, William Smith and his wife, Elaine, of Mesa, Ariz., John Smith of Lancaster, Calif., Donald Richard Smith and his wife, Barbara, of Blairsville, Pa., and Thomas Smith and his wife, Linda, of Herman, Pa.; three sisters, Mary C. Yamnitski of Butler, Rose McCall of Butler and Agnes Widenhofer and her husband, Wil, of Herman; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant granddaughter and two sisters.
SMITH - Friends of James M. "Smitty" Smith, who passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2013, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.
Blessing services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Harry R. Bielewicz of St. Paul Church officiating.
Officers and members of the American Legion Post 778 of Lyndora and the VFW Post 249 will conduct military services at Butler County Memorial Park. Burial will take place in Butler County Memorial Park.
Memorial donations may be made to the Butler Meals on Wheels, 218 E. Jefferson St., Butler, PA 16001.
