James Miller Burd, ex-state legislator
James Miller Burd, 81, passed away Monday morning at home in Saxonburg with his family by his side.
He was born in Winfield Township on March 31, 1931, and was the son of the late William and Pearl Miller Burd.
Raised on his family's farm, he graduated from Winfield-Clinton High School in 1951.
He served the U.S. Army in Korea from 1952-54 and upon returning home began a career as an entrepreneur and small businessman, founding a small chain of laundromats, an excavation and grading business and for the past two decades, a custom sawmill operation.
Jim was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1976 and served the 12th District until 1991, a tenure that included special appointments such as representing Pennsylvania to Eastern Regional Council of State Governments. He also served in government as a member of the Pennsylvania State Board of Vehicle Manufacturers, Dealers and Salespersons and board member of the Butler County Area Agency on Aging. He was also elected as a board member of the Central Electric Cooperative and served one term as its chairman.
An elder and member of the Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church and past-president and life member of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company, Jim belonged to numerous civic and fraternal organizations including the William H. Miller Lodge 769, the Scottish Rite of New Castle, Syria Temple, Royal Order of Jesters Court 2, the Syria Caravan 14-past director, Saxony Shrine club president, Saxonburg VFW Post 7376, American Legion Post 0683 and the Butler County Law Enforcement Officers Association.
Jim enjoyed the outdoors and often spent his time at home gardening, hunting, enjoying nature and building campfires at "Fort Burd," where he enjoyed watching Steelers and Penguins games with friends. He was also fond of music, especially country western, played the guitar and sang from an early age.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo, who he married June 3, 1954, and two sons, James E. Burd and his wife, Nelda, and grandson, Josh; and Mark D. Burd and his wife, Dianna, and grandsons, Garrett, Hayden and Simon. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Violet Burd, and brother-in-law, Art Czintos.
BURD - Friends of James Miller Burd, who passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, will be received on from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Fox Funeral Home, Saxonburg. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. David Brewer officiating.
Burial will be in the Saxonburg Memorial Church Cemetery.
