Joseph Edwin Stahlman
Joseph Edwin Stahlman Sr., 84, of Slippery Rock Township, Butler County, passed away at UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh, at 10:50 p.m. Sunday.
He was born in Furnace Run, Armstrong County, on June 18, 1928, to Roscoe Lewis Stahlman and Eleanora Wilhemina Hanson.
He married Betty Faye Bell on Feb. 14, 1948. She died on March 18, 1997. Later he married Garnet M. Doerr on Oct. 17, 1998. She survives at their home.
He graduated from Kittanning High School in 1947. He worked at Slippery Rock University for 42 years in the maintenance department, retiring as building maintenance supervisor in 1990.
He was an active participant in the Institute for Learning and Retirement at Slippery Rock University. He was active for most of his life in Boy Scouts. More recently he was active as a member of the Franklin Astronomy Club. He loved to travel. He and his wife, Garnet, traveled the world. He was active as a member of the Slippery Rock United Methodist Church. He was active as a licensed ham radio operator and his call numbers were WA3BVQ. He enjoyed spending time with his family.
Surviving are his wife, Garnet D. Stahlman of Slippery Rock; three daughters, Melba J. Tomeo (Michael) of Slippery Rock, Melissa J. Truman (Daniel) of Slippery Rock and Melanie J. McGurr (Sean) of Columbus, Ohio; three sons, Joseph E. Stahlman Jr. of Slippery Rock, Jay E. Stahlman (Robin) of Slippery Rock and Jeffrey E. Stahlman (Laurel) of New Wilmington; and five stepchildren, Robert W. Doerr (Lynn) of The Villages, Fla., Fredrick M. Doerr of Slippery Rock, Sharon G. Doerr of Slippery Rock, Terry L. Doerr of Slippery Rock and Mark R. Doerr of Slippery Rock. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, and his sister, Dorothy Ione Shoemaker.
STAHLMAN - Services for Joseph Edwin Stahlman Sr., who passed away Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, will be at the Slippery Rock United Methodist Church, Franklin St., Slippery Rock, at 3 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Kevin McIlwain, pastor of Slippery Rock United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
The interment at Slippery Rock Cemetery will be private.
