Robert DiSpirito Obituary

Robert George "Bob" DiSpirito Sr., 87, of Slippery Rock passed away at 7:50 a.m. Monday at VNA Hospice in Butler.
Bob was born Aug. 9, 1928, in Woonsocket, Providence County, R.I., to Angelo DiSpirito Sr. and Ann Tedeschi DiSpirito. He married Marilyn Frances Muegge on July 4, 1958, in Woonsocket.
Bob graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1947, where during his senior year, he captained both the football and baseball teams to state championships in Rhode Island and also lettered in basketball.
He received his undergraduate degree in physical education from the University of Rhode Island in 1953. During this time, he was recognized as a national collegiate All-American athlete in both baseball and football, where he captained both squads and was president of his senior class.
Bob served in the Army ROTC in college and then in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant from 1954 to 1956. He received his master's degree in physical education from Columbia University, N.Y., in 1958.
Coach "D" taught at Cheshire Academy in Connecticut, where he coached both football and baseball and later both sports at the University of Bridgeport, Conn., and football at Bucknell University. In 1967, Bob was recruited as head football coach at the Slippery Rock State College, later named Slippery Rock University, where he led the team to an unprecedented three consecutive Pennsylvania State Football Championships.
He retired as a coach in 1987 and as a full professor of parks and recreation in 1998. He achieved a total of exactly 100 career victories as a head football coach. Bob was later enshrined into the Slippery Rock University Sports Hall of Fame, the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame, the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, the University of Rhode Island Sports Hall of Fame, the Rhode Island Sports Hall of Fame and numerous other sports halls of fame.
In 2006, Slippery Rock University officially dedicated the school's football field as "Bob DiSpirito Field" in his honor. He was a longtime member of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Slippery Rock. He enjoyed and loved his family and friends immensely.
Surviving are his wife, Marilyn; three sons, Robert G. DiSpirito Jr. and his wife, Evangelina, of Dunedin, Fla., James D. DiSpirito and his wife, Carol Lee Espy, of Pittsburgh and David A. DiSpirito of Slippery Rock; two daughters, Diane E. Magliocca and her husband, Mike, of Slippery Rock and Lisa C. Redman and her husband, Chad, of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; his sister, Gloria Bottai and her husband, Fred, of Merritt Island, Fla.; his brother, Donald D. DiSpirito and his wife, Mary Lee, of Annandale, Va.; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Arthur, Angelo, Louis and Ernest, and two sisters, Bertha and Julia.

I owe so much to Coach "D" as he helped me to establish a firm foundation for a successful life! As an incoming freshman football recruit and the very first "athletic scholarship" recipient at Slippery Rock, I was insecure and unsure of my athletic and academic abilities! Thanks to Coach C and his staff, they served as role models for me and my fellow teammates, nurturing our potential on and off the field. Coach "D" was a players' coach! He cared about us not only as athletes but as students and human beings. I will forever be grateful to him, his coaching staff, and Slippery Rock University!

Coach DiSpirito was not only an outstanding head coach but a tremendous human being whose concern for his players went way beyond what happened on the football field. He truly cared about people and strived to serve as a good role model. I felt very fortunate to be part of the SRU football experience as "Coach D", his staff and the players put SRU football on the map during the early 1970s. No doubt, his legacy lives on in his family and former coaching staff and players! See you on the "heavenly" football field Coach D!

Memories come flooding back in reminiscing the passing of one of the men who helped mold me into the person I am today.

Coach "D" was our leader. More importantly, he was our model on how to be a Christian husband and father.

My only regret is we never got together for that round of golf we talked about prior to the SRU victory over FAU.

My prayers go out to the DiSpirito family. Take solace that the Lord has called him Home.

To the DeSpirito Family,

Coach D's influence was profound having created the "Rock" family which extended well beyond his immediate family. His gentle and humane nature demonstrated a respect for all nurturing dignity and a sense of belonging. Thank you Mrs. "D" and the rest of the DeSpirito family for sharing your husband and Dad with us. He will be missed by many. We send our love and condolences to you all.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

He was a great leader with a big heart, and will be missed by all of those he touched. Wishing his family comfort during this time of sadness.
