James R. Amon

James R. Amon, 73, formerly of 980 Kilgore Road, Stoneboro, Pa., died peacefully Friday after a 14-year battle with Parkinson's disease.
James was a 1956 graduate of Lakeview High School and a 1960 graduate of Grove City College. He earned a master's degree at Clarion University and was a chemistry teacher at Slippery Rock High School for over 30 years. Following his retirement from Slippery Rock, he was an adjunct professor at Thiel College for several years.
James loved playing the trombone and was especially fond of a good Sousa march. He was a founding member of the Harrisville Community Band. He was also a member of the Mercer Community Band for many years.
James was a member of Church of the Epiphany Episcopal Church, Grove City, where he was a member of the Bishop's Committee. He enjoyed church league softball, running 5K races, and was an avid Steelers, Pirates, and Cleveland Indians fan. His kind spirit and unique sense of humor endeared him to everyone.
James is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and L. Douglas Williams at home; a brother, Gerald L. Amon and his wife, Carol, of Mercer; a sister, Linda R. Wiggins and her husband, Gary, of Mercer; three nieces, Debra Jazwinski and her husband, Eric, of Stoneboro, Pa., and Kelsey and Kaitlin Wiggins, of Mercer; one nephew, Thomas Amon and his wife, Amanda, of Pittsburgh, two great nephews; and his ex-wife, Cheryl Wild of Grove City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Nellie Amon, also of Kilgore Road, Stoneboro.
AMON - A memorial service for James R. Amon, who died Friday, April 12, 2013, will be at James's childhood church, Irwin Presbyterian Church, 3653 Georgetown Road, Stoneboro, Pa. The family will greet friends at 10:30 a.m. Friday, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jeremy Stouffer, assistant pastor of Grove Manor, officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, New York, NY.
