R. Earlene Hovis, 75, a lifelong resident of Eau Claire, passed away peacefully at her home Sunday following an illness.
She was born in Eau Claire on Dec. 27, 1937, and was the daughter of the late Floyd and Gladys Evelyn McCall Davis.
She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church of Eau Claire.
Earlene assisted her late husband as tax collector, and following his passing in 2005, she was appointed to complete his term. She then won office in the subsequent election, and served until Jan. 31, 2013.
Earlene loved her family and could often be found outside in the spring and summer working in her flower beds and mowing her grass. She was an avid baker who loved to share her bake goods with everyone in the community. Earlene was very accomplished at crocheting and made numerous afghans throughout the years. She also was a longtime member of the Eau Claire Card Club.
Surviving are her four children and their spouses, Michele (Terry) Sullivan of Hilliards, Greggory (Pam) Hovis of Butler, Michael (Frenda) Hovis of Georgia and Robert "Robbie" (Krista) Hovis of Strattenville, Pa.; six grandchildren, Joshua and Jared Sullivan, Jason, Holly, Nicole and Zachery Hovis; six great-grandchildren, William John Smith IV, Kingston Hovis, Kelsey Lynn, Jalen, Conner and Kennedy Sullivan; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Calmont D. "Sonny" Hovis, who passed away April 15, 2005; and two sisters, Leanna Douglass and Janet Gardner.
HOVIS - Friends of R. Earlene Hovis, who passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013, may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the H. Jack Buzard Funeral Home, 201. S. Washington St., Eau Claire. A funeral service will be at the funeral home 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Richard Updegraff and the Rev. Ken Hughes officiating. Interment will follow at the Eau Claire Cemetery.
