Robert 'Bob' Wilson Corll
Our dad, Robert "Bob" Wilson Corll, 93, went home to live again with his savior Jesus Christ at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alberta Jean Corll (Shawgo); his mother, Bess Corll; his father, Harry Corll; and his brother, John Corll.
He is survived by his three children, Jaqueline Goubeaud (Corll) of Saxonburg, Jeffery Corll and his wife, Dianna, of Mars, and Robbie Jean Spryn (Corll) and her husband, Michael, of Webster, N.Y.; and his grandchildren, Jimmie Corll, Bob Spryn and his wife, Jen, Leah Sheetz (Spryn) and her husband, Nathaniel, and Milo Corll. He also is survived by his sisters, Phyllis Chisholm and Shirley Bauwin; his brother, Harry (Skip) Corll and his wife, Cathy; and his nieces and nephews.
Bob married the love of his life, Alberta, on Feb. 18, 1943. They were married 61 years, and they lived happily together through Jan. 2, 2004. They last lived together in Grove City, and after her passing, he lived with his daughter, Jacque, and his grandson, Jimmie, in Saxonburg.
Bob was born to Harry and Bess Corll of Sandy Lake, Pa., on Dec. 31, 1918.
He went to the Patton Trade School, Elizabethtown, Pa., and graduated as a tool and die maker in 1939. His first job was at Cooper Bessemer in Grove City, and that is where he met our mom, Alberta.
Bob was drafted into World War II in August 1944. He went to Germany in February 1945 and was wounded on April 11, 1945, in a machine gun fox hole near Guthol, Germany. Bob received the Silver Star for saving the lives of the other men alongside him in the fox hole from two German soldiers who had crawled into the fox hole. He fought them to their death after being severely wounded in his ankle and foot. Bob received the Silver Star for bravery along with the Purple Heart, the European Theatre of Operation (ETO) Ribbon with two stars, and the Combat Infantry Badge.
After returning home from the war, Bob enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering and received his diploma on June 9, 1949.
After college, he worked several different places and lived in Alliance Ohio, Erie, Grove City, Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and Zelienople. His last job was as plant manager for Herr Voss in Callery. He retired in 1983.
He was a member of the F & AM Lodge 434, Sandy Lake and New Castle Consistory.
After retirement, Bob and Alberta traveled all around the country seeing places such as Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, Colorado, Washington State and Alaska. They lived in Florida in the winters. When they finally settled down, they moved back to where it all began, Grove City.
Bob was a loving and faithful son, husband, father and grandfather.
CORLL - Memorial contributions honoring Robert "Bob" Wilson Corll, who passed away Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, can be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Cancer Society.
Funeral services will be at Cunningham Funeral Home, 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City, at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Robert H. Wilson, pastor of the Zion United Methodist Church, Sarver, officiating. Visitation hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
The burial with military honors will be in Crestview Memorial Park, Grove City.
