Sylvia V. Beatty
Sylvia V. Dunlap Beatty, 88, of Eau Claire died Friday afternoon at the Grove City Medical Center following a courageous 18-month struggle with leukemia.
Born in Chicora on Nov. 4, 1917, she was the daughter of Harry Gilbert and Jennie Mae Philips Dunlap.
She graduated from the former Chicora High School and attended several semesters at Grove City College.
Following her marriage to the late James M. Beatty Sr., she was employed for years at the former J.M. Beatty Merchandise and Grocery in Eau Claire.
She was the organist for the Bethel United Methodist Church in Eau Claire for much of the 1950s, and she had been affiliated with the Northern Butler County Music Club for years.
A member of the North Main Street Church of God from the late 1950s, she had been a faithful member of the church choir for decades.
At the time of her death, she was affiliated with the Park Hill Church of God in West Freedom.
In addition to her love of music, she was interested in ceramics, and for a time had her own ceramic classes.
She had a lifelong passion for the Pittsburgh Pirates, attending hundreds of games at Forbes Field and Three Rivers Stadium. She also was a loyal fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Surviving are two daughters, Gail L. Buzard and her husband, Jack, of Eau Claire, and Faye Hermann and her husband, Ken, of Pittsburgh; two sons, James M. Beatty Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Panama City, Fla., and Dean G. Beatty and his wife, Carol, of Eau Claire; 11 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-`grandchild; a number of nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, Cecil Beatty of Eau Claire.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Beatty Sr. whom she married Aug. 29, 1940, and who died June 18, 1979, and a sister, Gladys Dunlap White.
BEATTY - Friends of Sylvia V. Dunlap Beatty, who died Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at H. Jack Buzard Funeral Home, Main Street Route 38, Eau Claire. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Park Hill Church of God, Lime Plant Road, West Freedom, near Parker. Interment will follow at Eau Claire Cemetery.
