Barbara Joan Gardiner Sturtevant, 79, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Thursday at the Avalon Springs Nursing Center in Mercer.

She was born on March 15, 1934, in Providence, R.I., the daughter of the late Joseph and Jean Gardiner.
Joan lived in the New England area until she moved to Western Pennsylvania in the mid-1960s, where she and her family lived in Allison Park and then in Mars. She moved to Mercer in 2008, and most recently made her home at the Avalon Springs Nursing Center in August 2013.
She graduated from Lincoln Girls School in Providence and attended Lasell College in Newton, Mass., for interior design.
Joan was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and she was elected to the Mars School board. She obtained her Realtor license and enjoyed working as a real estate agent.
She enjoyed playing cards in card club, taking drives and traveling, vacationing at the beach and bird watching. She was an avid dog lover.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, and by her husband, John M. Sturtevant.
She is survived by her daughters, Sandra A. Antill and Susan A. Sturtevant of Charlotte, N.C., and by her son, Bruce G. Sturtevant and her daughter-in-law, Christine R., of Mercer.
Sturtevant - A memorial service for Barbara Joan Gardiner Sturtevant, who went peacefully to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 13, 2014, will be later at a time determined by the family.
The family requests that donations be made to the Avalon Springs Nursing Center, 745 Greenville Road, Mercer, PA 16137.
