Roy S. "Sam" Neel Jr., 94, of Franklin Township, Butler County, passed away June 29 at the rehabilitation unit of Passavant Retirement Community.
He was born on Oct. 8, 1919, in Dormont to Belle McClure Neel (originally from McKeesport) and Roy S. Neel, Sr. (originally from West Mifflin).
He is survived by daughter, Jean Scott Neel of Butler. He was preceded in death by wife of 58 years, Dorothy Scott Neel, who he married on Nov. 4, 1950, at the Scott farm (home of her parents, Frank and Nellie Scott), and who died May 11, 2009. Also he was preceded in death by brother, Robert M. Neel of Butler, and sister, Nancy Means of Harrisville.
He was a former member of St. Andrews United Presbyterian Church in Butler. He was a 1937 graduate of Dormont High School, and a 1942 graduate of Duquesne University with B.S. degree in business administration.
He enlisted in 1942, but flunked out at the end of 6th Officer Candidate Class, Marine Corps, Quantico, Va. Then he was Army draftee with basic training at Ft. Meade, Md., and Astoria, Ore. He was a member of the 267th Separate Coast Artillery Battalion Harbor Defense of Resurrection Bay and Seward, Alaska, in 1943 and 1944. Late in 1944, he was converted to infantry with training at Augusta, Ga. He was located at Army replacement depots at Ft. Meade, Md., and Salem, Ore., in 1944-1945 until discharge.
He had a traveling job in 1946 with a Pittsburgh accounting firm. He was a poultry farmer in Franklin Township, Butler County, from 1947 to 1956. He was employed by Armco Steel as a clerk in the machine shop, maintenance stores and spares from 1956 until retirement in 1982.
NEEL - Services for Roy S. "Sam" Neel Jr., who died Sunday, June 29, 2014, were private, and he was laid to rest in Greenlawn Burial Estates, Butler.
Arrangements were handled by the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.
