Doris Lyon Rose passed away peacefully Tuesday in Hershey surrounded by her loving family.
She was married for 38 years to Gail L. Rose, who died in 1981.
Born Dorotea Margherita Lyon, July 27, 1922, in the Free State of Fiume, now Rijeka, Croatia, she was the only daughter of Wilhelmina Marguerite de Thierry of Sromjlé, Austria, and Fred Marshall Lyon of Butler.
Doris spent her first 18 years in Europe living with her parents in Paris, France. She graduated from the Lycée Sainte Barbe in 1939. She also studied in Zurich, Switzerland, and in England on the Isle of Wight.
After the fall of France to Hitler, her family traveled to Lisbon, Portugal, to board the ocean-liner S.S. Exeter for New York and then came to Butler.
Doris lived in Butler with her grandmother, Margaret Blair Lyon, for two years. She attended Butler High School for one semester and graduated from The Butler Business College in 1942. That October, she married Gail L. Rose of Connoquenessing.
Doris was extremely active in her community, serving as a member and past president of the Butler County Junior Women's Club and the Butler League of Women Voters, as an elder of the Hill United Presbyterian Church and as a member of the Butler County Community College board of trustees. She also was active in the ALTER Project at Slippery Rock University. She was honored as the Woman of the Year by the International Soroptimist Club of Butler.
After raising her family on a farm near Connoquenessing, she enrolled in Butler County Community College, graduating in 1983. She continued her studies at Slippery Rock University, graduating magna cum laude in 1994, at the age of 72, with a major in English and a minor in French.
Doris is survived by four children, Dr. Lawrence Lyon Rose (Connie) of Basking Ridge, N.J., Stephanie Rose Morris (Samuel III) of Port Jefferson, N.Y., and Catherine Rose Zackey and Amy Rose Wissinger (David), both of Lebanon, Pa. She also is survived by 11 grandchildren, Jennifer Arcaro, Daniel Morris, Laura Stengel, Andrew and Stephen Rose, Abigail Ruez, Alexis, Diana and Meredith Zackey, Joshua Wissinger and Jill Fouse; and six great-grandchildren, Cassandra and Katelyn Arcaro, Lucille, Marguerite and Samuel Morris and Ruby Wissinger.
A son, Dr. Christopher Charles Rose of Pittsburgh, preceded her in death in 1996.
