Richard Settlemire Obituary
Richard D. Settlemire "Mayor Dick," 56, of Mars died Saturday at his home, after an illness.
Born in Pittsburgh on Sept. 11, 1956, he was the son of R. Elaine Henry Settlemire of Mars and the late G. Dale Settlemire.
He was a member of the Crestview United Presbyterian Church, Callery. He also was a member of the John E. Mair Lodge 729 F&AM and a social member of the Mars VFW Post 7505.
He was mayor of Mars for many years and retired as sales manager from Westmoreland Supply in Hampton.
Surviving are his wife, Kathy Ross Settlemire, who he married Dec. 16, 1978; his mother of Mars; two sons, R. Grant Settlemire and his wife, Stefanie, of Evans City and Eric M. Settlemire of Mars; one brother, Scott D. Settlemire of Grosse Pointe Farm, Mich.; a sister, Toni K. Taylor of Pittsburgh; and three grandchildren, Dylan, Lexie and Lily.
SETTLEMIRE - Friends of Richard D. Settlemire "Mayor Dick," who died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, will be received at the McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home, 238 Crowe Ave., Mars, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
The service will be in the Crestview United Presbyterian Church, 210 Kline Ave., Callery, at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Robert Goossen, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mars Cemetery, Adams Township.
Memorial donations may be made to Family Hospice.

Eric, Grant, and Kathy my deepest regrets for your loss, Mayor Dick was a great man. Although I have not been around in awhile I will always remember the times spent with him and all of you, I am sure your hearts are aching. I was not able to make it to give my condolences, because of my own loss of my Father, but I struggled with letting you know your not alone. As cliche as it is if you need anything please let me know, even if it is just to talk, having someone who knows what it feels like makes it better. Rest In Peace Dick

To all of the Settlemire Family I wanted to express my sympathies for your loss. Dick was truly someone you "wanted" to know and I was fortunate to know him and share many laughs and great times in my younger days. I was so sad when I heard about Dick's passing. While I have not seen him in many years, I can't help but remember his sense of humor, the smile, his baritone voice, and his huge and kind heart. As a younger family friend, I felt so privileged to wear his hand-me-down school cloths. I always felt that wearing his bellbottom jeans (huge bells) and the coolest shirts placed me a few notches up the cool scale. I will be forever grateful for the college funding he worked painstakingly to secure for me after my dad died. I would not have been able to complete my degree without him. My prayers and condolence to Elaine, Scott and Dick's family.

We were classmates of Dick's, Mars Class of '75, and neither of us can ever remember Dick being anything but kind to all, with a smile readily available to share with everyone he encountered. What a wonderful person, and sad loss to the entire community! God bless all of you, and may your sadness be soften with the thought of him spreading joy in Heaven and waiting to be with you again. Our family too was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Dicks passing.I will always remember the last time I saw Dick...he tried to help me out when someone got nasty. If you knew him at all you know he was that way..would help anyone anytime... Shared many laughs with him, if Dick was in the room you better be ready for some serious laughter. I was in shock when I was sent the message that Dick has passed. He was a great guy. I remember sitting with him at "Matchtu" at Glade Run Lake and talking. He will be missed by so many. My condolences to the family.

Dick was a huge help when I hosted Letterheads on Mars. He became an official "Letterhead" that weekend. He was also a great help to me any time I needed a special color of paint mixed. I will miss him.

Dick and I were childhood buds. We went to Adams township elementary together. We drove old lady Marburger crazy with our pranks. We buried a time capsule when we both moved from Callery. We hung out when I came back for visits. The miles and the years kept us apart. We never lost the bond we had. I saw him earlier this year for the first in along time and it was like we had seen each other yesterday. There are things in life that always make you feel good inside. Thinking of Dick always gives me the warm fuzzies. I will miss you. Love you Dick, Craig Raley.
