Howard D. Sample
Howard D. Sample, 82, of Saxonburg passed away in his sleep Sunday in the caring hands of the staff at Saxony Health Center.
He was born Feb. 20, 1931, and was the eldest child of Samuel and Dorothy Devroye Sample.
On Jan. 24, 1953, he started his life with the true love of his life, Ana Mae Macurdy. In over 60 years of marriage, he never wavered in his love and commitment to his wife.
Howard and Anna Mae lived in Sarver for more than 40 years before moving to Saxonburg.
Howard was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force.
Howard then worked for 44 years at Allegheny Ludlum in both the locomotive crane division and caster operation of the Brackenridge Melt Shop. He was active in the United Steelworkers, holding several executive positions during his career, and after retirement, he served on the retiree's benefits committee.
Howard was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sarver, where he served on council on numerous occasions. He was an active member of the Armstrong Lodge 239 F&AM in Freeport. Following his retirement, he volunteered at Allegheny Valley Hospital in both the cardio care unit and emergency room.
Howard enjoyed his trips to Florida every winter and became an active member in the retirement community of Sebastian, Fla. He enjoyed golfing with his fellow retirees. He was president of the Whispering Pines Golf League. He was active in the AAL organization and Arcadia Club. He spent his life working to help others.
He was a Pirates and Steelers fan, but most of all he enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Anna Mae, he is survived by his sons, John (Donna), Dennis (Melissa), Michael (Jeanine) and Patrick (Rhonda) Sample, his 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also, he is survived by his brother, Walter Sample; sisters, Pearl Jack and Virginia (John) Berczek; and his aunt, Ruth Smith, who he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Shirley Munson, and his special aunt, Mildred Decroo.
