John A. "Jack" Eisler Sr., 82, of North Franklin Street, Prospect, a well-known resident and community leader, went to be with the Lord at 3:01 p.m. Sunday at Butler Memorial Hospital while surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Eisler was born on Dec. 15, 1930, in Butler, the son of John M. and Mary McBride Eisler.
John was a 1948 graduate of Butler High School and attended Penn State University. He was a member and longtime elder of the Presbyterian Church of Prospect. He also was a lifetime member of the Prospect Borough-Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department, and had served the department as treasurer for 50 years. Mr. Eisler was a founding member of the Critchlow-Hays American Legion Post 417 in Prospect. Mr. Eisler received numerous state awards from the American Legion for his dedicated service, including the Gold Brigade Award for his selfless efforts in founding Post 417 with 130 members. He had served the post as Adjutant, and was a past delegate to national and state conventions. Jack also served as the 26th District vice-commander. Mr. Eisler was a member of the Scotland School, 40/8 and the Prospect Parade Committees.
Jack was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War.
He served for more than 25 years on the Franklin Township zoning board and was one of the board's original members. Mr. Eisler worked for his father in the family business, Eisler's Nursery, until his father died. Mr. Eisler had worked there for more than 45 years and started working at the nursery at age 11.
He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Janet J. Kronberg Eisler, who he married in Cumberland, Md., on Jan. 6, 1954. Also surviving are his four children, Becky Osborne and her husband, Robert, John A. Eisler Jr. and his wife, Virginia, Sandra Cranmer and her husband, Scott, all of Prospect, and Nancy Harmon and her husband, James, of Berlin Heights, Ohio; his nine grandchildren, Shawn, Michael, Keith, Jennifer, Crystal, Melissa, Kelly, Kathryn and Joanne; his 14 great-grandchildren; his brother, David Eisler of Slippery Rock; his three sisters, Jean Finnie of Scituate, Mass., Millie Eisler of Slippery Rock and Judy Jerome of Ohio; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Schedler.
EISLER - The friends of John A. "Jack" Eisler Sr., who passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, will be received at the Jay Bryan Funeral Home, 443 Main St., Prospect, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday from the Presbyterian Church of Prospect, 115 Church St., Prospect, with the Rev. Deb Crusan, officiating.
Interment will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery, Prospect.
Military honors will be provided by VFW Post 249 and the American Legion Post 778. The funeral procession will pause at the Prospect Borough-Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department for a memorial service and "final call."
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Eisler's name to the Prospect Community Library, 357 Main St., Prospect.
