Nick Kononchuk, 92, of Butler died Thursday at VA Butler Healthcare.

Born on Nov. 28, 1921, in Butler, he was a son of the late Eustaphia "Ostop" Kononchuk and Anna (Lokovich) Kononchuk.
He worked as a carpenter at Veterans Affairs for 36 years, retiring in 1979.
Nick was a member of the St. Andrew Orthodox Church in Lyndora, the D.A.V., the American Legion, the VFW and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy Reserves.
Surviving are his sons, David (June) Kononchuk of Massachusetts and James Kononchuk of Connecticut; his two grandsons, Corey Kononchuk and Taylor Kononchuk; his two great-grandsons, Matthew Piana and Kevin Piana; his sister, Elizabeth Onufer of Pennsylvania; his sister-in-law, Muriel Longanecker of Ohio; and his brother-in-law, Donald Barnhart of Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Kononchuk; his brother, Samuel Kononchuk; and his three sisters, Helen Smith, Alice Thomas and Sonia Tita.
Kononchuk - The friends Nick Kononchuk, who died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. The funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. David Shortt will officiate. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Burial Estates, Mount Chestnut.
