LONG, Lois Eileen
July 5, 1929 - April 9, 2013
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Lois Eileen Long, on April 9 at the Beverly Care Centre. Lois died peacefully in her sleep after a long battle with COPD. Lois was born in Wood Mountain, Saskatchewan in 1929, the second in a family of four and the only girl. Lois was a child of the Great Depression and carried the lessons of that period for a lifetime: thrift, self-reliance, and family values. Lois grew up in Wood Mountain and Estevan, Saskatchewan before attending the nursing school at the Regina General Hospital, where she graduated in 1950. It was during her initial time as a nurse at the Regina General that she met a patient and her future husband Ross. Ross and Lois were married in 1951 and lived in Regina until 1959 when Ross was transferred by Sohio Petroleum to Calgary, where they made their home for the last fifty-four years. Ross and Lois celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in Calgary in May, 2001, shortly before Ross' death in June of that year. Lois had many passions in her life, including curling, beekeeping, gardening, crossword puzzles, mystery novels, and following the ups and downs of the Calgary Flames. She was an ardent fan and long-time season ticket holder and always had an opinion on the best way to improve the team! She also had a lifelong love of learning and a sense of adventure that she passed on to her children. She may not have always been thrilled with the adventures they chose but she always encouraged them to pursue their passions. She was quiet, reserved, and was ready to give advice with a gentle hand when asked. She was a constant source of strength and encouragement for both friends and family. Although her health began to fail her in the last year of her life, she never lost her spark or spirit. She will be missed terribly and remembered fondly. Lois is survived by her children, Judy, Doug (Nancy), James (Pat) and Dan (Stephanie); eight grandchildren; as well as her brother Rick; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. She was predeceased by her husband Ross; her brothers Bernie and David; and her parents Kathleen and Oscar. A Celebration of Lois' Life will be held at the Calgary Golf and Country Club (one and a half blocks west of the intersection of Elbow Drive and 50 Avenue S.W.) on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. Family, friends, and neighbours are encouraged to attend and to bring pictures, stories, and fond memories. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Lung Association, P.O. Box 4500, Station South, Edmonton, AB T6E 6K2 (Telephone 1-888-566-5864. www.ab.lung.ca). In living memory of Lois Long, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
