RACKSTRAW, Daphne Irene
November 9, 1931 - December 11, 2012
Daphne Rackstraw passed peacefully from this world on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 in the Bowcrest Nursing Home with her family at her side. Daphne (Daph to her friends) was born and educated in London, England.
She immigrated to Canada with her husband and young son in 1952. She worked as an administrative assistant with the Provincial Laboratory for several years, and later became a volunteer manager at the Kerby Centre. She taught beginner guitar lessons to hundreds of budding musicians for the Calgary Board of Education. Daphne believed strongly in volunteering. She particularly loved folk music and contributed many hours to the Rocky Mountain Folk Club. Daph had a passionate zest for life. A talented watercolor artist, she truly enjoyed reflecting the beauty of Canadian nature. Singing and playing music also brought her great joy and when presented with an opportunity to dance
she was the first on the floor. A loving wife,
mother and grandmother, she was generous, compassionate and emotionally strong. These characteristics aided her as she
fought a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Daphne will be deeply missed by her loving family, husband Bill, son Stephen, daughter Lisa and granddaughter Genevieve.
When I can't play I'll sing
When I can't sing I'll whistle....
And when the day comes
I can't whistle no more
I'll sit myself down and I'll listen.
Daphne truly knew the meaning of friendship and was blessed with many wonderful, caring friends. Thank you so much to everyone who has held her in their thoughts and prayers and for the tender, loving care from the compassionate staff at the Bowcrest Nursing Home. In lieu of gifts of remembrance, we would ask that you play a song or raise a glass in her memory at your next potluck. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com
. In living memory of Daphne Rackstraw, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park, Cochrane.
