Derek EVELYN

EVELYN, Derek Edward Todd
April 23, 1936 - November 23, 2012
Derek Evelyn of Calgary passed away on Friday, November 23, 2012 at the age of 76 years. Derek Evelyn was born in St. Kitts, West Indies, and lived in Nevis - Montserrat, Tortola and Antigua before immigrating to Canada in 1954. After graduation from McGill University (B.Com 60), Derek joined Shell Canada Ltd. in Finance and Administration where he enjoyed a thirty year career. He had fond memories of bush-plane trips to Canada's Eastern Arctic outposts, instructing the Inuit so they could be plant managers. Derek's career involved postings in Montreal and Toronto before his 1984 transfer to Calgary, AB. This move meant giving up Lake Ontario "slooping" for "prairie schoonering". With his wife Sylvia by his side, they adopted the RV lifestyle with gusto. They explored much of Canada and the United States of America in their motor- home. In their retirement they spent their winters in Naples, FL and Surprise, AZ. They made lasting friends at every stop. Derek was a voracious reader and crossword puzzle addict, but his real passions were fitness and the outdoors. He was a regular at the Riverside Club, both on the tennis courts and in the gym. At different times he played and refereed soccer, helped to build the infrastructure at Toronto's BPYC, played tennis and enjoyed biking and pleasure skating particularly outdoors on Lake Bonavista. Among his favourite memories were an idyllic bareboat charter in Nevis with Sylvia, trips with her to Europe and Australia, many weeklong backpacking treks in the Rockies with good friend Colin Laight and, in later years, long West Coast sails on Colin's yacht. Another much cherished memory was the weekly movie-and-dinner outing with good friends in the "Dinner Gang". Derek was predeceased by his beloved wife Sylvia (nee Dufort) of fifty years. He will be missed by his two sons, Todd and Stuart of Toronto; his brother Dr. Trevor Evelyn and wife Sandra of Nanaimo; brother-in-law Jean-Guy Dufort and wife Christiane of Montreal. Derek was an outgoing person and will also be missed by many friends and family. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Bernard's Catholic Church (711 - 37 Street N.W., Calgary, AB), on Monday, December 3, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 - 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2. In living memory of Derek Evelyn, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park, Cochrane.
