1947 - 2013
Sandra Mapp died peacefully in Calgary, Canada on June 12, 2013 with her family at her side at the Foothills Hospital.
Sandra Irene Mapp (nee Messenger) was born March 10, 1947 in Bourneville, Birmingham, England to Sonia and John "Bob" Messenger and brother John. She attended Kings Norton Girls Grammar School and went on to Homerton College, Cambridge University where she completed her Bachelor of Education degree. There she met her future husband Roger, and the couple married in 1970. They settled in Crawley, Sussex and Sandra taught biology at Holy Trinity School. She later moved to the Lady Edridge High School, Croydon where she became head of the biology department at age 27.
In 1975, Sandra and her husband moved to Canada. She spent her first year in Vancouver, BC briefly working in retail but proudly selling diamonds to the local rock stars of the time. Upon moving on to Edmonton a year later, Sandra taught biology to mature students at Edmonton College (now part of MacEwan University). By 1977 the couple had moved to Fort McMurray where Sandra taught high school science and gave birth to her first daughter Alison in 1978. The family moved first to Edmonton, where daughter Zoe was born, then to San Francisco and finally to Calgary in 1984. Sandra is survived by her husband, daughters and mother and predeceased by her father and brother.
Later in life Sandra was co-founder of a non-profit organization raising funds for local charities. She retained a strong interest in charitable support throughout her life. She also travelled the globe, reaching all six continents and most of their wine-growing areas during her lifetime.
For Sandra, her greatest accomplishment was her family, raising two daughters with her husband, to whom she was married for 42 years. Sandra was an amazing mother, devoted wife, supportive daughter and committed friend. Sandra will be deeply missed by daughters, mother, husband, cousins, in-laws and the many friends she made throughout the world.
The family would like to thank the many health care professionals, aides and others who supported Sandra during her four-year journey with cancer.
At Sandra's request a private family service will be held. Flowers are gratefully declined; however, if desired, a donation to Calgary Children's Cottage (845 McDougall Road N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 5A5 or www.childrenscottage.ab.ca
