Link BYFIELD Obituary
He grew up in Manitoba and moved to Alberta in 1978. He succeeded his father as publisher of Alberta Report magazine in 1986 until the magazine closed in 2003. He mentored dozens of young journalists over two decades. He was a brilliant writer and columnist and wrote or contributed to books on Alberta, Canadian and Christian history. He penned four plays for young people and directed productions of each in the mid-90s. He loved the outdoors, hiking, and music. He will be remembered by his family and those who knew him as courageous, principled and humble. His abiding faith in the Lord strengthened and comforted him as he battled cancer.
Prayers will be held Friday, January 30 at 5 p.m. and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, January 31 at 11 a.m., both in St. Emerence Catholic Church in Riviere Qui Barre, AB.

Dear Joanne and children, Ted, siblings and family. I was very sad to hear the news of Link's passing. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend yesterday's service but my thoughts have been with you all week. Link had a great impact on my life. Although I had limited opportunities for conversations with Link, each time I experienced the considerate, thoughtful and good-hearted nature of Link. My prayers continue to be with all of the Byfield Family as you grieve your loss and reflect on good memories of a great man.

I am sorry to learn of Link's death. His family is in my thoughts and prayers. Link and I often disagreed, but I never doubted his sincerity, the strength of his beliefs, or his conviction that individuals could make a difference. Whenever I was in his company I felt like a knife in the presence of a whetstone.

Joanne, and family, Very sorry to hear of Link's passing. Somehow, it seems fitting that he died on the feast day of Saint Francis de Sales.Our daughters would like to also pass on their condolences.
