Stewart McCRAE Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Sep. 4 to Sep. 5, 2015.
McCRAE, Stewart Alden
December 30, 1929 – September 2, 2015
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Stewart Alden McCrae, the loving husband of Mary, at Carewest Sarcee after an 8 year battle with cancer. Stewart was born in Gladstone, Manitoba and graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in Law. He practiced in his home town of Gladstone for a short time and then came to Calgary in 1957 to work for the California Standard Company (now Chevron Canada Resources) in the Legal Department. He took a leave from Chevron for 9 ½ years to enter politics with the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. He was Minister Without Portfolio responsible for Calgary affairs for one term and then became Minister of Government Services in 1979 and held that portfolio until he retired in 1982. He returned to Chevron for ten years and retired in 1992. He was active in the Triwood Community Centre, coaching hockey and baseball while his three sons were growing up. Golf became a passion for him, being a member of the Bearspaw Country Club and also spent many years curling in various curling clubs. Stewart was a very humble and private person who loved his family dearly, as they loved him. Stewart is survived by two sons, Mike (Lori) and Clint (Chantal); and five grandchildren: Justin, Katelyn (Brody), Brianna, Jacob and David. He was predeceased by his son Brian in 2008, three brothers and two sisters and leaves behind one dear sister, Janet (Bob) and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke's Catholic Church (corner of Northmount Drive and Northland Drive NW) on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Private graveside service to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Stewart's family through www.evanjstrong.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stewart's memory may be made to the Tom Baker Cancer Center (1331 29 St NW Calgary, AB T2N 4N2; telephone: 1-403-521-3723; website: www.albertacancer.ca/ tom-baker-cancer-centre), or a charity of one's choice. The family wishes to thank Dr. Reuther and the staff at Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the doctors and staff at Carewest Sarcee for the exceptional care Stewart received. Arrangements in care of EVAN J. STRONG FUNERAL SERVICES. (403) 265-1199.

Mary & Family:
Stewart earned quiet, but precious esteem, for his service to this constituents and to the Province while he was in the Legislature. I also appreciated him as a friend and colleague.
May you find comfort in knowing that he helped to make this a better world and in many beautiful memories of the life you shared.

Love and kindest wishes.

Mary, MIke, Lori and all the McCrae Family - I have 27 years of memories of Stewart and 100% of those were at family gatherings or with Stewart watching his grandchildren participate in a sport or activity. Stewart and Mary you did everything to be present on all occasions, I can attest to that. This has built the McCrae Family so very strong for generations to come. Stewart lived such an active life and participated in so much, he made a great contribution and served as a great role model. My thoughts are with you all now as you miss him dearly. You have so many years of great memories to hold close, take care, love, Nonie

Mary, and all the McCrae family. Stu and I served together in the Legislative Assembly. I remember him as a thoughtful gentleman -- thoughtful not only about the issues but also about those caught up in the issues and those around him. He contributed to the spirit of good in the province.

Dear Mary and Family:
Our paths crossed for the first time at the University of Manitoba. We both attended Law School. We both ended up in the oil industry where our paths crossed often. He was one of the nicest people in the industry. I will not be able to attend Mass at St. Luke's this morning, but I will miss his presence every Sunday morning and I will include him in my prayers. May he rest in peace and may the Peace of Christ be with you and your family now and always.

Clint & Chantal
We are so sad for you and your family. We know you'll find some comfort in sharing your memories and celebrating your dad's life together. I remember your dad and mom attending so many of the sporting activities our boys participated in together. He was a huge sports fan especially when it was his grandchild playing and his son coaching. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
