Andrew UNGAR Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Dec. 13 to Dec. 14, 2013.
UNGAR, Andrew George
April 9, 1936 – Budapest, Hungary
December 7, 2013 – Calgary, AB
Andrew Ungar, our beloved father and grandfather, passed away suddenly at his home in Calgary on December 7 at the age of 77. The younger of two children, Andrew was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary, and immigrated to Canada in 1956. Living in Montreal and working as a draftsman, he met the love of his life, Mary Wyman, a teacher from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, whom he married in 1960. There they raised their family until moving to Calgary in 1980. Despite often working two or even three jobs at a time, Andrew always found time for his many passions; watching, coaching and refereeing soccer, enjoying the opera, complaining about the Montreal Canadiens and travelling the world were among his favorites. Later in life, when he was not clocking kilometers in his twice-weekly swim, he was playing bridge; in person, when there were games being played, and on-line when there were none. No morning was complete without his daily Suduko. Family reunions were incomplete without his reminiscences and endless bad jokes. As a father and grandfather he was loving and supportive in every way. He cherished his friendships, and used his persistence to track down friends and to organize his 50th high school reunion back in Budapest. He would be very disappointed to be missing his 60th. Andrew was predeceased in 2009 by his wife Mary. Left behind to mourn his passing are son Richard with wife Karen and grandsons Noah and Aaron; son Garnet with wife Gina and grandsons Samuel and Peter; sister Panni (Ban); family throughout the country and friends whose lives he touched. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, December 19, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca Street S.E., Calgary) on Friday, December 20, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. In living memory of Andrew Ungar, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

I am shocked to hear about the demise of my good friend Andrew Ungar. We went out for lunch many a times He always mentioned his family. He was worried about his health. I used to console him with a fact that no pain no worries. He amazed me with his accomplishment eg swimming so many laps inspite of poor heart. His superior confidence in playing bridge. Through bridge he met many good friends from as far as Argentina and Australia. I will miss him dearly. He loved his family with all his heart.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
Om Shanti, Shanti Shanti(Peace)

I am so sorry to hear of Andrew's passing and my sincere condolences to his family. A true gentleman at the Bridge Table and the best dressed by a country mile. I will truly miss him.

Andras bacsi, I'll never forget that you were my first assessor and mentor here in Calgary, being a fellow Hungarian, we had that in common. Learned so much from you, even got my first pair of assistant flags from you and all those books about football and Ferenc Puskas...and you had introduced me to CDSRA as well!
I was deeply saddened by your departure, very unexpected... rest in peace, Andras bacsi!

I played Bridge with Andrew often at the Clubs, Sectionals & Regionals, and at our very first game he and I discovered we had a connection through his wife, Mary Wyman, as I was born in Yarmouth, N.S. (Betsy Shaw of Willis Shaw family) and now of course, am living in Calgary. Andrew and I had a number of fun bridge games together and he certainly challenged me at the table, all with good intentions I am sure. Andrew..I will miss you at the table!!

Andrew you were a friend & a mentor to so many referees,we will always feel your presence at the field. You will never be forgotten. I was lucky enough to have refereed with you & gained so much from the knowledge you shared. Rest in peace my friend & keep that whistle blowing until we meet again.

I was shocked to hear about Andy's passing. I wish all the best wishes his family and friends. There are so many great memories around the soccer field and as a fellow referee and mentor. Knowing you has made me an even better referee throughout the years and your legacy has touched so many lives.

I was saddened to hear of his passing, despite the fact Andrew and I butted heads over the years in the refereeing community. He was a man of incredible insight and as willing to give a criticism as take one.

I'll miss you, Andrew. The world is a poorer place without you.

Only met Andrew a few times at the Gaudun Ukrainian Christmas but Marilyn and I always enjoyed talking to such a friendly and interesting fellow. Deepest sympathies to Richard, Karen boys and the rest of the Ungar family.

It is so sad when a good friend is no longer there to give a call or to plan a visit. Andrew, I will miss you. You touched many lives with love and humour.

I am saddened to hear of Andrew's passing.

Andrew was a great inspiration to me when I was starting my soccer refereeing career back in the 80's. He also was instrumental in getting me to 'sign up' for the CDSRA Executive. Little did I realise at the time how much help and support I was going to get from people on the executive. Andrew was key in me pushing on to better myself at refereeing and to challenge the higher level exams.

Andrew was never shy about giving advice, even when I was a Provincial Referee! Nevertheless, it was always something to improve my game and for that I will be forever grateful.

So, thank you Andrew for everything. I know I told you this while you were with us, but I'll say it again - and mean it, again.

I had the pleasure of knowing and being a friend of Andrew Ungar for over 30 years. He was a hard working individual and a "first class" friend (as was his wife, Mary). My condolences go out to his family members. He will be missed.

I was both shocked and saddened to hear of Andrew's passing. I always enjoyed joking with him at the bridge table and he will be missed. Sincere condolences to the family. May fond memories be yours and sustain you in your sorrow.
