George GRANT Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Jan. 29 to Jan. 30, 2016.
GRANT, George Donald
November 12, 1926 – Regina, SK
January 22, 2016 – Calgary, AB

George Grant beloved husband of Betty Grant of Calgary passed away on Friday, January 22, 2016 at the age of 89 years. George was born and raised in Regina and studied Geological Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. He then headed west to begin a career as a geologist at Chevron Canada, a career that ended up spanning 43 successful years. He was committed to serving his community; he was President of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists in 1970, was a dedicated supporter and volunteer for the Alberta Conservative Party, and was very active with his community association. Above all, George was dedicated to his family: sharing 61 amazing years with his wife Betty, raising his 3 children and participating enthusiastically in the lives of his 7 grandchildren. His extra-curricular pleasures were simple: gardening, curling, bridge and golf. George's prairie roots remained strong, drawing him back to his beloved Qu'Appelle valley every summer where he had many wonderful times with his brother Jack and his many childhood friends. His loyalty to the Saskatchewan Rough Riders remained unshakable right to the end. Besides his loving wife of 61 years, Betty, George is survived by his children, Bruce (Helena), Marnie (Piers), Jim (Karen); his grandchildren Reid, Kirsten, John, Jordan, Lindsay, Nicole and Claire. George was predeceased by his parents Donald and Edna and his brother Jack. A Celebration of George's life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to thank Maison Senior Living for the wonderful care and support George and Betty have received. We are also grateful to the Sarcee hospice for providing wonderful end of life care. In living memory of George Grant, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

We are so sorry to hear of George's passing. My father, Bill Robertson, worked with him at Chevron for his entire career, as did my Mother for a few years and myself, before I returned to school. He was smart, funny and a pleasure to know - we shall remember him fondly.

I knew George for over 50 years as a fellow Chevron employee for part of that time. Will always remember his kindness and wisdom willingly shared. It was always a pleasure to talk with George whether about exploration, politics or his summer activities at the cabin. My sympathies and condolences to the family.

It has been our privelage to know your husband/father/grandfather over many years, and we will miss him. A testament to the significance of his life, is the quality of the family he (with Betty) raised, influenced, and ultimately he left behind.
Thank-you for sharing him with us.

Dear Bruce, Marnie and Jim,
We are sending you our condolences to you and your mom, on the passing of your dad. We remember White Pines Resort with the creaky wooden cabins, the fun family dinners, laughter and playing on the dock. We have thought of your family often and the amazing times we all spent together in the heat of the summer joined with the Williams family. Love Terry, Judy and Brenda
