Terence McDONOUGH Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from May 6 to May 9, 2017.

McDONOUGH, Terence
July 15, 1938 – Banff, Alberta
May 3, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with immense sadness we announce that our hero and family leader, Terence (Terry) Edmund McDonough passed away in Calgary May 3, 2017. Born July 1938 in Banff, Alberta, only son of Edmund and Mona McDonough. He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Sherry McDonough (nee Lynch-Staunton), his sons Stephen McDonough (Bonnie Curran), Michael McDonough (Jill McDonough), daughter, Shannon Huygens (John Huygens) and nine grandchildren whom he adored - Jackson McDonough, Kennedy McDonough, Maximilien McDonough, Noah McDonough, Allie McDonough, Macy Jane Huygens, Abbey Mae Huygens, Danielle McDonough, and Blake Huygens.
Terry was a going concern and always on the move. Up at the crack of dawn, he seemed to cram two days of activity into one 24-hour period. Usually the first to initiate or volunteer on new projects, he approached every day with optimism, enthusiasm and energy. He supported his family with great pride and was the biggest cheerleader for anything any one of us became involved in. He was always first to the hospital for the birth of a grandchild; first to offer a ride to the airport (or a 3 a.m. pickup); first one in the seats at a game or performance to cheer us on. Terry's constant availability and support served as a great example to his children and grandchildren. These qualities are not lost on them and they have big shoes to fill.
Husband, Father, Grand Dad, Pilot, Volunteer, Entrepreneur, Friend, – Terry filled many roles and did so at full-speed. He offered his time selflessly. If his family or friends had a problem or a need, a call to Terry got things happening. He was a member of Rotary Club South Calgary with 100% attendance at weekly meetings for over 40+ years. He was a proud recipient of Calgary Stampede Honorary Life Membership for commitment and efforts on the Calgary Stampede Downtown Attractions Committee. A member of Canadian Petroleum Engineers Association, Calgary Flying Club, Calgary Petroleum Club, Calgary Golf & Country Club, and Southern Alberta Pioneers Society. Terry lived a full, impactful life and his legacy will continue.
Terry loved his many friends and made a point of consistently reaching out with genuine interest and concern as to their well-being. If things weren't okay, he was the one guy anyone could count on to help make things right. As in every facet of his life, he faithfully found a way to make a difference in the lives of so many.
Terry was an accomplished pilot and made his living for many years as a bush pilot or 'Flying Mudman' in Northern Canada. He had many colourful stories to tell about those days and he was only too happy to share them over coffee or a dinner party. He was skillful, experienced, and safe but he sure could get a reaction from those hearing of his adventures. Happily, each of those stories ended with a perfect 3-point landing of his airplane. He continued flying as a hobby and was quick to help a friend reach a destination at any time.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to honour Terry by emulating what he embodied: reach out to someone you haven't contacted lately, check in with your friends or find a simple way to make another person's day. If you feel so inclined, donations to the South Calgary Rotary Club would be appreciated to advance the Rotary Annual Arbor Day tree planting program in which Terry was so proud to Chair.
The family would like to thank everyone who has offered condolences and assistance, particularly the Staff at the Foothills Hospital Stroke Unit who treated Terry with kindness and immense compassion. We ask you to update your Will and Advanced Directives as a final gift to your loved ones.
Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
In living memory of Terry McDonough, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Sherry, Steven, Michael and Shannon,

I am so sorry to hear about Terry's passing. Like Marcy, Terry and your family have a prominent place in my early childhood memories. Timber Ridge, skiing at Panorama, Christmas parties at your house were remembered with fondness when Marcy called me today.

One of my favorite memories is Terry teaching me to ski on the bunny hill at Panorama. "Leanne, if you ever feel yourself losing control, just lean back." Good advice for on and off the slopes.

Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers,

Leanne

Sherry, Steve, Michael and Shannon,

I am so very sorry to hear of Terry's passing. Much of my childhood is wrapped up in the wonderful memories of times spent with all of you in Calgary, Timber Ridge and out at the Thornton's ranch. Terry was larger than life and had a heart of gold. I will hold all of you in my thoughts and in my heart.

Condolences to the McDonough family on the loss of your well-respected patriarch.
In all of my interactions with Terry, at the sidelines of his grandkids' sports, downtown, and at his beloved Stampede, he was truly a Prince of a Man.
He certainly led a full life, and heartwarmingly touched many people throughout.
You all have so much to be proud of, and I trust that you will continue to carry Terry's legacy of integrity and support, as you have done to date. He's left behind a fine crew!

Dear McDonough Family. I was deeply saddened to hear of Terry's passing, and the great loss you and Alberta has suffered. Terry was one of those "true blue" Albertans that seems to be a rarity with respect to the passion and sense of principle, history and vision he brought to every discussion. I have not known Terry for as long as I wish I had, but I feel blessed to have spent enough time with him to hear many great stories of his pride in having been a true Alberta Builder, and a proud Canadian. As a born and raised Calgarian, I also am proud to share the legacy and heritage of entrepreneurial spirit, prairie work ethic and inclusiveness which are all hallmarks of the great city we all call home. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during these difficult days. Godspeed and keep those wings up!

Sherry and family, I'm so sorry for your loss, Terry was an amazing person. I alway remember him as happy and full of life. When he would visit the ranch he always would bring something from the Shepatds Inn and this was one of many fond memories of Terry; always generous and kind. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

To the McDonough Family, from Australia:
It was an honor knowing your husband Sherry......he was an amazing man!!! Such wonderful memories. Always generous, always kind. To Stephen and Mike, your Dad meant the world to us and we will miss him and his smiling face. To the family members whom we have met over the years and those we have not, our deepest condolences.
Terry did so much for our family and to me personally from supplying drilling mud expertise to our days at the Calgary Stampede selling Dream Home tickets for Rotary. They brought many rounds of laughter for all involved. Rodeo tickets, dinners at the Calgary Golf and Country Club with friends and family afterwards were very special.
We will never forget Terry's brief visits at Christmas always leaving a little something behind. They we're warmly welcomed. I'm sure we were only one of many stops as he spread his kindness throughout the City.
We will take your words of wisdom very seriously. I don't know how many times we spoke of getting in touch. Days pass, we get busy and now....it is too late, heartbreaking really.
May your fond memories bring solace to your grief.

Terry, Mr. McDonough to me, was a very kind and generous man. He put my name forward for a trip to Quebec with the Rotary Club. I continued to pursue learning French due to that first authentic encounter with the language. We spent many winter weekends skiing and May long weekends, what felt like breaking the ice, and waterskiing at Invermere with all of you. You are all such generous people. I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. My prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

To the McDonough family and you Steve. As a member of the Calgary Stampede Courtesy Car Committee I was always amazed at the kind generosity your father provided us at Stampede. Without fail your father would arrive before Stampede with a truck loaded with potato chips, peanuts and our favorite cheezies that we all really enjoyed. When we ran out he came with more. It meant a lot to me and am sure the whole committee. He was a very good man and I will miss him.

Sincere sympathy is sent to all family members from the many friends at the Southern Alberta Pioneer Association.
