MENNIE, Alexander Duncan
February 22, 1918 - Aberdeen, Scotland
October 11, 2013 - Calgary, Alberta
Alexander Duncan Mennie, beloved husband of Shirley of Airdrie, AB, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2013 at the age of 95 years. Alexander came to Reston, Manitoba from Scotland at the tender age of three. Nicknamed Scottie seemed appropriate and that is what everyone called him. Everyone that is but his mom, sister and nephew Jack who always called him Alec. Scottie joined the army in 1941 and was in the Lord Strathcona Horse Squadron B Second Armored Regiment. He served in France, Italy, Africa and Holland returning home after the war was over. Scottie worked hard in everything he did. He enjoyed all sports but his two favorites were curling and golfing. Scottie retired in 1992 from the Hotel/Motel business. He and Shirley worked for the Travelodge managing both the south and north locations for fifteen years prior to retiring. Scottie will be missed by his family and all of those who knew him. The family would like to thank Dr. Mayhew and Dr. McKenna and the staff of Unit 61 of the Foothills Hospital. Alexander is survived by his loving wife Shirley of 62 years; his two sons William and Greg; his grandson Scott; and his daughter-in-law Sally as well many nieces and nephews. Alexander was predeceased by his granddaughter Kayla; his parents Jane and William; his sister Catherine and his brother William. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Airdrie Funeral Home (300 Towerlane Drive, Airdrie, Alberta) on Friday, October 18, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion (Horton location). In living memory of Scottie Mennie, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park, Cochrane.
