Alice Etta Zeisler, born in Winnipeg July 14, 1923, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 years at the Rockyview Hospital in the company of family and friends as the sun was setting over the mountains on the evening of May 30, 2012. Alice is survived by her husband of sixty-two years, Abe Zeisler; her children Leib Zeisler (Bettina) and Ruth Zeisler (Carlton Hughes); her grandchildren Forrest (Anna), Royce and Alyssa, and an extended Calof family. She was predeceased by her grandson Colin Hughes, her brother Chaim Calof, and her sister Judith Calof. Alice was appreciated for her vigor and intellectual curiosity. After her children left home, Alice returned to the University of Regina and earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree. Later in life, she was an active member of the Calgary Women's Literary Club, where she presented papers on many topics including, Martin Buber, Eli Wiesel, Leon Uris, Jose Rizal. She followed politics avidly, campaigned for John Diefenbaker, and usually rooted for the underdog. In her later years, she began to give away books from her large library, always inscribing messages of love and wisdom. Alice was proud. She was proud of her family and her Winnipeg roots. Alice had a zest for travel, and enjoyed telling stories of her trips with Abe, including journeys to the Philippines, (where she learnt the special meaning of Mabuhay), Hong Kong, Switzerland, two cruises to Alaska, and three trips to Israel. Alice was sociable. Alice lived in Regina for thirty years and maintained strong friendships after she moved to Calgary. She was a life member of Hadassah, and belonged to Ort, N'amat, the Canadian Stuttering Association, the sisterhoods of both Congregation House of Jacob-Mikveh Israel and Beth Tzedec. She very much enjoyed participating in the Tuesday afternoon coffee klatch at the Trinity Lodge. Alice was a person who got younger as she got older, always seeking out new experiences. Thank you to the staff at the Rockyview Hospital, Carewest Fanning and Carewest Glenmore for their compassion and caring. A very special thank you to Dr. Morys for twenty years of medical attention and friendship.
