ATKINSON, Christine
July 24, 1952 - January 25, 2013
Christine Atkinson, beloved mother of Tom, Deb and Paul, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2013 at the age of 60 years. She slipped away peacefully with her daughter at her bedside. Christine was born and raised in England, where she finished university and fell in love with Derek. In 1981, Christine and Derek moved their young family to Calgary. Christine lovingly raised her three children and worked outside the home, while her husband often travelled on business for extended periods. During this period, Christine decided to go back to university
and earn a second degree in education.
She subsequently enjoyed a rewarding
career teaching for many years and inspired many students and colleagues. Christine was a very intelligent and fun loving individual, always up for any social gathering. A kind, compassionate person, Christine was a
friend to many and established a loyal network of close friends. She was an animal lover and advocate for the Earth. Some of
her many interests included astronomy, travelling, hiking, walking in Fish Creek Park with the dogs, games, puzzles and trivia.
For the last decade, Christine struggled
with a neurological disorder, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). She faced
every hurdle and new challenge the disorder subjected her to with fierce determination and remarkable grace. It was a battle
fought until the very end with unwavering dignity. Christine is survived by her children, Tom (Gabbi), Deb and Paul (Cate); her cherished grandchildren Jane and Liam;
and her siblings Barbara, Richard and Jeremy in England. Christine was predeceased by
her husband Derek on September 30, 2009. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) today, January 31, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor's choice. The family is grateful to the tremendous daily care she received in recent years from Shirley, who made it possible for her to stay in her home as long as possible, Wentworth Manor, Sarcee Hospice and finally, Carewest Garrison Green. In living memory of Christine Atkinson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
