BACKS, Cornelia "Cora" Maria
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Cora Backs, on Tuesday, December 4, 2012. Cora spent her final days wrapped in the loving embrace of her devoted family and close friends. She was born in Den Hout, Holland on October 3, 1925 and grew up in a boisterous family of twelve children. At age 17, Cora met the love of her life Jack and they happily planned their future together. Jack immigrated to Canada in 1948 and worked hard to bring Cora over to join him. On May 9, 1949, Cora's ship "Tabinta" landed in Quebec and she spent six long days on a cross-country train to join Jack in Bottrell, Alberta. They were married in Cochrane on May 21, 1949 and spent the early years of raising their family in Cremona, Crossfield and Carstairs before moving to Bowness. Together they raised a happy, fun-loving family of six children. Cora was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother ("Gigi"), sister, aunt and friend. She was a kind and generous person with a great sense of humour. The greatest joy in her life was her family. Cora's home was a weekly gathering place for family and friends who came to eat, play games and visit. The house was always filled with her children's friends who also became part of her extended family. Cora loved to play jokes on her family, and we have many fond memories of the laughter that resounded throughout our lives. She also loved to garden and happily shared her produce and flowers with family, friends, and neighbours. Cora was predeceased by her beloved son Jim in 2001, and her beloved husband of 57 years Jack in 2007, as well as numerous siblings and family members. Cora will be profoundly missed by her loving children: Richard (Marti), Mary Anne, Dianne, Beverly (Bud), Steve, and Diane (Dean) as well as her grandchildren Candice (Ryan), Scott (Jenna), Brian (Natasha), Alisa (Ray), Shawn (Kathy), Jeff (Vanessa), Dustin (Heather), Tyler, Delaney, Roby (Michelle) and Ricki (Nick). "Gigi" will be greatly missed by her great-grandchildren: Kaydence, Evan, Alexis, Maddox, Quinton, Aidyn, Jade, Rylan, and Aliyah, as well as numerous siblings, extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to Calgary Health Trust, E-O U of C Liver Unit (Research), Suite 800 - 11012 Macleod Trail S.E., Calgary AB T2J 6A5. A Memorial Service will be held at FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen's Park Cemetery) on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORIUM.
