Dorothy passed away peacefully on July 28, 2012 in Langley Gardens Retirement Home at the age of 90 years, daughter of the late Joseph and Sarah Garshman. Dorothy is lovingly remembered by her sons Joel (Ann), Mendel (Carla), grandchildren Justin, Derek, Chanel, Lauren, Sophie and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Milan (2007) and her siblings Hymie and Gertrude Garshman. Dorothy was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the eldest of three, and soon moved to Calgary, Alberta. Due to the untimely passing of her father, Dorothy left school at the age of 14 to enter the workforce. By the age of 17, she began working at the Chateau Lake Louise Hotel and so began her long-standing service and dedication to Canadian Pacific Hotels. In 1942, she transferred to the Palliser Hotel in Calgary as a waitress in the Rimrock Dining Room, a position she occupied until her last working day in December 1986. Dorothy served at banquets for kings and queens and well known celebrities; she had many regular customers who came and specifically asked for her. She officially retired from C.P. Hotels February 1987, after 48 years of service. Dorothy had a delightful, vibrant personality. She was a stylish dresser, loved to dance and had a passion for jewelry, real and fake, as long as it sparkled! Her sharp wit and wonderful sense of humour was equally matched with her deep and abiding love and loyalty to her family and friends and her flair for delicious home cooked meals. Despite her declining health in later years, she had a tremendous passion and will to live; wanting to be around to see her grandchildren's life experiences as they became young adults. The family wishes to express their thanks to the doctors and nurses in the renal unit at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Also our deep gratitude to the nurses and caregivers on the complex care floor at Langley Gardens for their bountiful love and dedication to her care for the last three years of her life. Funeral Service will be held August 1, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Schara Tzedeck, 2345 Marine Drive, New Westminster, BC. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Kidney Foundation of Canada would be appreciated.
