KLASSEN, Erdman "Ed"
December 4, 1936 - June 19, 2012
Ed Klassen, beloved husband of Elaine of Calgary, passed away peacefully in the arms of his family on Tuesday, June 19 at the age of 75 at the Agape Hospice after a ten-year struggle with dermatomyositis and cancer. Ed challenged his illnesses at every opportunity and never wanted to give in. Ed was born near Blumenhof in southern Saskatchewan. He moved with his family to Vanderhoof, BC in late 1942, met and married Elaine there in 1965. They moved with their sons to Calgary in 1973 where Ed worked for Smith Petroleum (UFA), Conmac (LaFarge), and then the Alberta Wheat Pool. After he retired, Ed still worked part-time for the Pool until he was no longer able to work. Ed was an avid outdoors person, enjoying camping in the surrounding area with family and friends, and spent many a beautiful fall day hunting in the foothills with friends. He was a wonderful family man who also is survived by his twin sons, Brent (Minnie) of Maryland and Brian (Brenda) of Calgary; and six grandchildren, Cody, Dallis, Ellison, Brent in Maryland and Chad and Sidney in Calgary. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and cousin and was one of fourteen siblings. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Maria Klassen; brother John; and sister Mary. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Flowers gratefully declined. If family and friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 - 29 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta, T2N 4N2. Heartfelt thanks to the compassionate nurses and assistants at Agape Hospice for their tender- hearted care of Ed during his last days with us. Also to the wonderful nurses and staff of Unit 32 at Foothills Hospital for their compassionate care of Ed during his final illness. Throughout Ed's journeys, we met very dedicated and caring health professionals, Drs. Webster, Hao and Lao and their amazing assistants at the Tom Baker, Dr. Penney when it all began, Dr. Kawakami at Rockyview, our family doctor Dr. Van der Watt and the wonderful staff at the Day Care Unit of Tom Baker. In living memory of Ed Klassen, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park, Cochrane.
