POWELL, Edward (Ed) Albert
July 5, 1929 - January 6, 2013
Ed Powell, our dear Dad and proud Papa's valiant struggle with Parkinson's and heart disease ended at the Chinook Care Centre on Sunday, January 6, 2013. A native Calgarian, Ed was born July 5, 1929, the eldest son of Albert (Bert) and Eva Powell and brother to Bill (Carole) Powell. After nearly fifty-seven years of marriage, Ed was predeceased by his loving wife, Joan, in April 2011. He is survived by his much loved children, Shelley, Trudy (Chuck) Sawyer, John (Rinde), and Stephen (Tracey Hyde); and grandchildren, Julie (Kyle) Seidel, David Sawyer, Stephanie and Joanne Powell, and Diana and Lauren Powell, who will always treasure the happy times spent with Papa. Ed will also be fondly remembered by sisters-in-law, Kathleen Hatfield and Kathleen Welham; nieces, Barb, Kate, Linda, Sue, Bev, and Tricia; and nephews, James and David; as well as many cousins and friends. Ed attended the University of Alberta where he received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, beginning his career as a pharmacist/owner of Capitol Hill Drugs and Collingwood Drugs. Ed later moved into managerial positions with Zellers Pharmacy in several locations until his formal retirement. Finally going back to his pharmacy roots, Ed ended his career working with several old friends on a part-time basis. Always active in professional organizations, Ed was on the Board of Directors for Northwest Drug Co. Ltd for many years. He also served his community as the President of the Cambrian Heights Community Association, and he was a member of the Pleasant Heights and Wild Rose United Church's Official Board, charter member of the Calgary Winter Club, Zone Captain for the Heart Fund, and Volunteer Pharmacist at Heritage Park. Ed enjoyed curling, fishing, gardening, hockey games, classical music, walking his dog, and travelling with Joan. He was devoted to his family, friends, Church and community and we will all miss his wisdom, enthusiasm for life, and especially his keen sense of humour. The Powell family wish to thank the dedicated staff at the Chinook Care Centre for their support and compassionate care of Ed over the past two years. A Memorial Service will be held at Wild Rose United Church (1317 – 1 Street N.W.) on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 - 14 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 (Telephone 403-781-1978, www.heartandstroke.ca) or to the Wild Rose United Church Foundation, 1317 – 1 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2M 2S5 (Telephone 403-277-5576).
