BIRD, (Margaret) "Elaine" (nee Grant)
February 1,1928 - December 24, 2012
It is with great sadness that the family of Elaine Bird announce the passing of their mother after a brief illness and declining health at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary in the early hours of December 24, 2012. Elaine will be dearly missed by her four daughters; Nancy (Ron) Christensen, Marjorie Bird (Mike Morrison), Janie (John) Pighin, Janice Bird (Martin Hall) and one son Ernie Bird (Lise Anne Pinder); 14 grandchildren, 14 great- grandchildren, and 19 step-grand and great- grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Norman Grant and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mom was predeceased by her loving husband, Buster ((Ernest) Bird on July 30, 1992; their infant son Ernest Edward; her parents, Ada and John Grant; her in-laws, Hilda and Ernest Bird; brother Allan Grant, numerous brothers-in-law and sisters- in-law, a niece, nephews and several cousins. Mom was born in High River, and grew up in the Blackie/Dinton area. She married Buster on November 26, 1949. She lived most of her adult life on the Bird farm at Aldersyde working hard alongside him. Mom loved her flower and vegetable gardens, and being a great cook and loving to bake, there was always a jar of fresh baked cookies for "tea time" and for hungry family or friends who dropped in for a visit. The traditional gum drop cake was her specialty for the kids and special friends at Christmas. In Mom's relaxing moments, she could be found sewing, knitting and crocheting while catching her favorite shows on TV. Mom always put others before herself, cherishing her family of whom she was so proud. She never complained, even right until the end when she would tell her doctor "it wasn't too bad" even though she was fighting for every breath. Mom was famous for her beautiful infectious smile...it lit up the room! She loved music and achieved grade 5 as a pianist and played for the United Church services in Aldersyde. Lawrence Welk was a favorite program on TV. Elaine was a member of the Aldersyde W. I., and when she moved to Okotoks, was a member of the Seniors Club at the Centennial Centre. Mom lived at the Silver Willow in Nanton for her last two years. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the SNODGRASS FUNERAL HOME in High River, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance, 1441 Aviation Park N.E. Box 570, Calgary T2E 8M7 or the Foothills Country Hospice, Box 274, Okotoks, Alberta T1S 1A5.
