CHILDS, Frederick Dean
December 1, 1925 - January 5, 2013
Fred Childs of Calgary died after a short illness on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the age of 87 years. Born and raised in Bluegrove, Texas. At age eighteen, Fred was drafted in to the 424th Regiment of the 106th Infantry Division of the United States Army. Upon returning from active duty in Europe, he completed a Bachelors Degree in Geology at Midwestern University under the GI bill. In 1956 he moved to Canada to work in Alberta's rapidly growing oil and gas industry, beginning a long and successful career in geology. It was here in Canada where he met his loving wife Colleen of 57 years. Fred never really retired and while managing residential properties, Fred was often seen raking leaves or shoveling snow well past his 80th birthday. He was an admirable man who will be greatly missed. He will be dearly missed by his wife Colleen, his three kids Dean (Diane), Linda (Mark) Davis and Ted (Suzanne); his sisters Ruby-Lee, Naomi and Lottie, as well as nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Fred was predeceased by his loving parents and his brother Frank. A Memorial Service will be held at The Salvation Army, Glenmore Temple (921 - 68 Avenue S.W., Calgary) on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of Fred Childs, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
