SUTHERLAND, Gladys (nee Mills)
Gladys Sutherland (nee Mills), beloved mother and grandmother passed away peacefully at the Sarcee Hospice on Friday, December 7, 2012 at the age of 100. Gladys was born in Manchester, England in May of 1912 and immigrated to Canada in May of 1914. She grew up in the Wainwright area and trained as a teacher in Edmonton. She then returned to the Ribstone, Chauvin, and Provost area where she taught in various one room school houses during the 1930's and early 1940's. In 1946 she accepted a job with the Calgary School Board and moved there in August. She married Jim on Christmas Eve in 1949 and together they built a home and started a family. Gladys loved to bake and do crafts of all kinds. She made baby sweaters, blankets, cross stitch pictures, Christmas ornaments, mitts, and recently knitted dishcloths and scrubbers. Gladys was also very active in the community where she belonged to the Eagles, Rebekahs, bowling leagues, a golf club, square dance club and the Good Companions. She held various positions in these organizations including president, treasurer and pianist. She screened children's eyes for the Oddfellows with her husband and spent 27 years volunteering at the Sarcee Auxiliary Hospital. In recent years she knitted squares to make blankets for the homeless. Gladys enjoyed travelling in the trailers built by Jim. They took many trips to the United States, journeyed across Canada three times, and made a number of trips to visit her birthplace and family in England. In later years she enjoyed trips with her children and grandchildren to Disneyland. Gladys was predeceased by her husband, Jim, in 2006 and her three younger brothers, Cyril, Raymond and Robert. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Janice Sutherland of Edmonton, and Eva-Lynn (Neil) Probert of Calgary, her four granddaughters, Erin (Mark) Lopaschuk, Jill Probert (Mike Carriere), Leya Sutherland and Cami Sutherland and many other cherished relatives and friends. The family would like to thank Terri and Wilma who have been Gladys's faithful friends over the last few years and her sister-in-law, Irene Mills, who came from Vancouver every year to visit Gladys. We would also like to extend our thanks to the staff at the Sarcee Hospice for their care and compassion. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Matthew's United Church (2039 - 26A Street S.W., Calgary, AB, T3E 2B9) on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Sarcee Hospice (3504 - 29 Street S.W., Calgary, AB, T3E 2L3) or St. Matthew's United Church.
