July 26, 1918 - February 19, 2013
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Irene Nemethy on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at the age of 94 years. Irene was born in Transylvania on July 26, 1918. She met her husband Bèla in 1935. Irene had two daughters 18 months apart, and since Bèla was in the Hungarian army, she was uprooted many times, travelling from Budapest, Visegrad, Porszombat, etc. Irene followed her husband while travelling with two babies with bombs and sirens cascading all around her. She located her husband Bèla through the Red Cross and they were united again in Strasbourg where Bèla was a prisoner of war. Irene loved fashion. You could say "fashion was her passion". She survived the war through sewing and alterations. In France she quickly learned French and German to serve her clients. Bèla, Irene and the girls immigrated to Canada in 1949 with the help of Bèla's sister Josephine Buzogan (Brooks, Alberta). Irene took these moves in stride, always seizing the opportunity to learn and to adapt to her new home in Calgary. Irene was well known as a fashion guru, working at Simone Fashion and Jane Bennett of Britannia. Irene was always well attired and stylish. Irene and Bèla were founding members of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church. In 1956, during the Hungarian Revolution, Irene took in families and youth with love. Her home was a centre of many joyous occasions for all family, friends and neighbours. Even strangers were never turned away without food or clothing. Irene was predeceased by her husband Bèla in May 2007, and her daughter Irene in 1980. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Erika (Hajnalka/Aurora) and Sandor Baksa; four grandchildren Bill Baksa, Sandor Baksa Jr., Michael Keleman, Pamela (Howie) Wieler; five great-grandchildren Lucas, Zacharias, Tennele, Breanna and Austin; sister Palotai (Ernone) in Budapest; as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada, USA and Hungary. Irene will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all her family and friends. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church (819 - 13 Avenue S.W.) on Friday, February 22, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. with The Rev. Lawrence Manolache, Presider. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Rockyview Hospital, Unit 46 and Chinook Carewest for their care and compassion. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Irene's family through In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Irene may be made to St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church (819 - 13 Avenue S.W., Calgary, T2R 0L1). Arrangements in care of EVAN J. STRONG FUNERAL SERVICES. Phone: 403-265-1199.
