MACPHAIL, Joan Annette MacPhail
Of Medicine Hat, passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at the age of 80 years, beloved wife of the late Archie MacPhail. She leaves to cherish her memory seven children: Colleen (Herb) Adair, Carol (Allan, deceased) Voth, Deborah (Wayne) Holden, Keith (Kathy) MacPhail, Janet (Rick) Porter, Calvin (Susan) MacPhail and Ken (Brenda Lea) MacPhail; her grandchildren, Troy, Ryan (Susan), Krista (Paul), Michael (Hui), Jennifer (Matt), Yvonne (Jason), Jason (Karilyn), Tracey (Shaun), Karly, Kyle and Kassidy, Kalan, Kelsey and MacKenzie; Ivan, Lara, Venture, and Dylan; Lauren (deceased), Shelby and Mitchell; along with eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Gordon Anton; one sister, Blanche (Dan) Hudec; a sister-in-law, Patricia Anton as well as several nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and John Anton; her husband Archie on June 2, 2010; one brother Ken Anton and one sister in infancy. Joan was born on July 19, 1931 and raised in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan. It was there that she met and married the love of her life, Archie. They were married for 59 wonderful years! She was a devoted wife and mother of seven children, grandmother of twenty grandchildren and great-grandmother of eight. Joan was a superb cook, preparing delicious meals seemingly from nothing for her large extended family, local parish priests and many friends. She loved gardening and preserving all types of fruits and vegetables, but was probably most renowned for her incredible baking. Countless friends, neighbours and relatives were regular recipients of Joan's mouthwatering treats. Outside of the house, Joan enjoyed her many years working at the Medicine Hat Co-op where she made numerous lasting friendships. Joan was also an avid bridge player and always looked forward to her weekly outings with the bridge ladies. She played her last game of bridge two days before her passing. Joan's two biggest heroes were her long-time surgeon and friend, Dr. A. McCelland and her family doctor, Dr. T. Mohanraj. Joan was diagnosed with colon cancer at age 50 and together they treated her for cancer related illnesses over 30 years. Joan had tremendous pride in her children and grandchildren. They in turn, respected, admired and loved her dearly. She will be profoundly missed. Family and friends are invited for an evening celebration service in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Philip Le Celebrant. A private Interment will take place. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to remember Joan may do so with a gift to the Margery E.
