September 17, 1943 - March 2, 2013
John Gradon, beloved husband of Doreen Gradon of Vernon, BC, passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the age of 69 years. John was born in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England on September 17, 1943. At the age of three, he moved to Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, and attended Cumnock Academy. He spent his youth playing cricket, rugby, football and golf - passions he carried his entire life. A newspaperman from the start, John was just sixteen when he earned his first byline in the Kilmarnock Standard. Since then, John's journalism career as writer, columnist and editor spanned nearly five decades and many newspapers, including the Glasgow Evening Citizen, Sunday Express, Daily Mail, King and Hutchens Group Berkshire, Calgary Sun and Calgary Herald. His love of telling stories took him around the world, including Uganda, Colombia and Bosnia, and to all corners of Canada. In Calgary newsrooms, John also became a mentor to many aspiring journalists, or "good little workers." John proposed to his wife, Doreen Gradon (Jones) on their fifth date. They were married April 24, 1971 in Glasgow, and had forty-two loving years together. A devoted family man, John shared his passion for storytelling with his son Stuart, a newspaper photojournalist. He loved nothing more than spending time with his granddaughter, Raina, whom he called a brilliant light in his life. In 2005, John and his wife retired to their dream home overlooking Lake Okanagan, where he spent many hours golfing and following every move his beloved Newcastle United Football Club made. John is survived by his wife Doreen; son Stuart; granddaughter Raina Gradon-Jones; sister Ann Buchan; daughter-in-law to be Jamie Komarnicki; brother-in-law Alan Jones; and aunt Joan Young. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Elizabeth and Frank Gradon. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the Cardiology Fund, Kelowna General Hospital Foundation, 2268 Pandosy Street, Kelowna, BC V1Y 1T2 (Telephone 250-862-4438, www.kghfoundation.com). John's family wishes to thank neighbours Kent and Kim and staff at Vernon Jubilee Hospital and Kelowna General Hospital for all their kind efforts. In living memory of John Gradon, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
