Uldis (John) Uiska, beloved husband of Arline, passed away suddenly at home in Nanton, Alberta on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at the age of 75 years. John was born on February 16, 1937 in Riga, Latvia, and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1949, settling in the Oakville area and later Toronto. He received his Honors B.A. from Western University in 1961, and started his working career with Union Carbide. John moved to Calgary in 1966, working through increasing roles and responsibilities in the oilfield drilling industry. There, he met Arline in the fall of 1968, and they were married in 1972. John was active in the Latvian social circle and church, and was treasurer of the Latvian Church in Calgary at the time of his death. He enjoyed the outdoors through camping, hiking, gardening and fishing, and loved travel to warm spots in the winter, especially Hawaii and Mexico. He appreciated good music, good food, and good wine in the company of friends and family. Besides his loving wife of forty years Arline, John is survived by his sisters-in-law, Mary Uiska, Shirley (Mel) Weber and Lorna (Len) Yont; brothers-in-law Bill (Anita) Yont and Don (Louise) Yont; nieces and nephews; and numerous relatives in Latvia. He was predeceased by his parents Vilis and Velta Uiska, and twin brother Austris. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
