GREEN, Mabel Irene (nee Gordon)
October 10, 1919 - January 8, 2013
With great sadness we bid farewell to Mabel Irene Green (nee Gordon) on January 8, 2013. Mabel died peacefully in Calgary with loved ones at her side. She is survived by her five children Lynn, Leslie (Ian), Tom (Reta), Oriana (Barrett) and George (Linda), brother Les (Doris) as well as her 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband John and brother Stan. Mabel grew up on a farm near Ensign, Alberta, about eight miles from the farm near Herronton that she moved to when she married John and where she raised her family. She stayed on the farm until 2006 when she moved into High River. Mabel always knew she wanted to be a nurse and achieved her dream in 1941 when she graduated from the Holy Cross Hospital nursing program. She worked as a "special" nurse in High River for several years, tending to some of the most difficult cases, until she moved out to the farm after marrying John. Mabel was very proud of her Norwegian heritage; she was a life member of the Sons of Norway and traveled to Norway to visit her relatives on several occasions. Active in the community, she was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Eastern Star, Blackie United Church, Herronton Community Centre and other organizations; she took a great interest in politics and was involved in many federal and provincial campaigns. Mabel was most of all devoted to her family, her greatest joy was to ensure that everyone was well fed, loved and cared for. She was always elegant in her manner and dress and had a compassionate and gentle, yet tenacious spirit. She will be greatly missed by her large family, many friends and community. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Louw and the nursing staff at Peter Lougheed Hospital as well as the staff of the Beverly Centre, Midnapore. Arrangements in care of Snodgrass Funeral Homes, High River. A Memorial Service will be held at the High River United Church, 123 Macleod Trail, High River, on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Susan Lukey officiating.
