HOWIE, Margaret
Margaret passed away at the Colonel Belcher Extended Care Facility on Friday, January 18, 2013 at the age of 91 years. Marg was born in Paisley, Scotland on April 17, 1921. At the age of four she sailed to Canada with her parents, John and Bessie Russell and sister Winnie. The family settled on 22 Avenue, just west of 10 Street N.W., which was at that time the outskirts of Calgary. Marg received her education in Calgary attending Crescent Heights High School and later Henderson's Business College. She then pursued a secretarial career. In 1938, she met the love of her life and lifetime partner, Jack Howie. On March 6, 1942, Margaret and Jack were married in Hillhurst United Church. They were blessed with two sons, Dennis and Doug. She returned to the workforce after raising her family and in the 1960's spent a number of years in an administrative capacity with the Metropolitan Calgary Foundation. After Jack retired, they channeled their energies into charity work. Marg and Jack were two of the ten original founders of the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank and for over 20 years they contributed to the success of the food bank, which has become a vital and essential part of the Calgary community. They also volunteered with Meals on Wheels for many years. Jack and Marg enjoyed RVing and spent many weeks and months exploring Western Canada. They enjoyed travelling and escaped the cold by visiting Hawaii, the southern States and Mexico. Marg's hobbies included knitting, reading, and curling. She was an active member of St. David's United Church's Ladies' Group. Jack and Marg were also members of the church's Graduates Group and treasured the fellowship and good friends found there. Margaret is survived by sons Dennis (Bette) and Doug (Nancy Cooke) of Calgary; grandsons Darren (Nadia) and Chad (Rachel); great-grandchildren Malika and Alexander Howie; sister Winnie Morrill and Jack's sister Catherine Hutchinson; Jack's two half-brothers William (Anne) Howie of Kansas City and Michael (Terri) Howie of Las Vegas; her sister-in-law Pat Howie; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Margaret was predeceased by Jack, her husband of 68 years, in 2010; mother Bessie in 1994; father John in 1964; brother William in 1929; sister-in-law Barbara Grace in 1995 and brothers-in-law Robert (Bob) Howie in 1997 and Norvin Morrill. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the caring staff at the Colonel Belcher where Margaret was a resident for the last five and a half years. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. David's United Church, 3303 Capitol Hill Crescent N.W., Calgary on Friday, January 25, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, memorial donations may be made directly to Calgary Interfaith Food Bank, 5000 - 11 Street S.E., Calgary, Alberta T2H 2Y5; or or St. David's United Church Foundation of Calgary, 3303 Capitol Hill Crescent N.W., Calgary, Alberta T2M 2R2.
