Narendra Deo, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012 at the age of 89 years. Narendra Deo, the second of four sons of R.S. Misra, was born in the Himalayan Foothills, but grew up in Rajasthan, where his father was an educator. He studied at Benares Hindu University, and in 1947 got a scholarship to Harvard to be an electrical engineer for newly- independent India. He worked on the Tennessee Valley Authority dam project, and for Quebec and Ontario Hydro, before returning to India in 1952 with Mary Campbell - they married in Lucknow. N. Deo worked for Bharat Heavy Electricals on the Bhakra Nangal Dam. In 1967 he immigrated to Canada, first to Burnaby, B.C., where he worked for B.C. Hydro and for B.C.I.T., moving to Calgary in 1980. A lifelong student, volunteer and mentor, Deo was a member of professional engineering Associations APEGGA and IEE, and a long-time member of the Calgary Hindu Society. He was active in many service organizations, and was recognized for work with the Vedanta Society; Calgary Science Centre; Indo-Canada Association; Interfaith and Multicultural Associations, among others. We will miss his gentle spirit and wry wit. N. Deo is survived by his beloved and loving wife of sixty years, Mary/Meera; daughters Sheila Mishra (Jagannath Chingunde); Pratibha Sarkar (Anil); Veena Mishra; and numerous grandchildren, nephews and nieces, and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinninsandholloway.com.
