Nazira Mamdani June 5, 1969 - February 22, 2013 Nazira Mamdani passed away peacefully on February 22, 2013 after an eight and a half year battle with a brain tumour. Nazira was an avid community volunteer and activist. After graduating from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and obtaining an additional certification in oncology nursing in 1991, she started her career at the Canadian Cancer Society and later established herself as an independent health consultant specializing in developing teaching resources and planning programs which have had a significant impact in the lives of many Albertans.

Some of Nazira's accomplishments include the planning for "Best Beginnings" designed for pregnant teenagers, and the smoking regulations imposed on hospital campus for staff. In 1997, she led a team to organize a conference on women's health in Calgary, which has now become the annual Women and Wellness Expo.

Her true legacy are the three beautiful children she leaves behind - Rheanna, Ariya and Armaan. They will remember her and the positive change she made in this world.

In memory of Nazira and in support of a cause she both struggled for and with, her friends and family have established the Nazira Mamdani Memorial Research Fellowship, to be awarded in 2014, to accelerate the work to treat and support brain tumour patients and, one day, a cure for the disease. Please see http://tribute.braintumour.ca/naziramamdani/ for more information or to contribute to the Fellowship.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, February 25 at the Ismaili Centre, 1128 - 45 Avenue NE.
