GILLINGHAM, Peggy (Margaret G.)
June 20, 1931 – Walkerville, ON
October 8, 2017 – Calgary, AB
It is with great sadness we announce the death of Peggy (Margaret) Gillingham nee Gow. After a brave fight with pancreatic cancer, she passed onto the next step of her journey on Sunday, October 8, 2017 with her family by her side. Beloved daughter of James S. Gow (1953) and Marion K. Gow nee Bartlet (1992). Cherished sister of Sandy (Bonnie), Sheila (Jack), and Bonnie (Jim). Devoted wife to Peter (2015), loving mother to Dave (Tamara) and Rob. Adored forever by the love of her life, her grandson Quinny. Peggy was a strong, accomplished woman with a life-long passion for learning. Her love of histology lead to a career in advanced lab technology with aspirations of pathology. Working in libraries and hospitals, she kept her education growing in several areas, always seeking to know and understand more about the world around her. She was eager to share with us all that she learned, and encouraged us to do the same. Peggy travelled and lived in Western Europe in her young, single days, falling in love with many cultures and bringing them home with her. Travelling the world continued after she started her family, but also exploring Canada with greater depth. This exploration gave her a respect and appreciation for Indigenous artwork, which graced her home along with her other world art treasures. Peggy's other passions kept her outdoors and loving the active life. Summers found her camping, gardening, cycling, and taking hikes that would leave many of us breathless. In the winter she could be found cross country skiing, snowboarding or competing against her friends in downhill skiing. She was a veteran yoga student, inspiring her fellow students with her ability and dedication. Her friends were dear to her; her nickname, "Mother". We often heard of the fun times, the lives shared, and the support they gave her and Peter over the years. We thank you, her friends, for the happiness you brought to her. We ask that you celebrate your love for her in your own special way that brings smiles to your eyes along with the tears. We will be honouring her wishes for no funeral, knowing that she will be remembered with many raised glasses, hugs between friends and loving stories shared. Condolences may be forwarded through Memorial tributes made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation 1 (866) 412-4222, or to your local cancer centre would be greatly appreciated. In living memory of Peggy Gillingham, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
